Ročov is best discovered through its churches, monastery and historic landmarks in the townscape. It is worth making a clear distinction: the protected Augustinian complex is in Dolní Ročov and is accessible only under certain conditions; in Horní Ročov, a church has its own history, dating back to 1355. A lime tree, a statue of the Madonna and a niche chapel complement the religious buildings with natural and local history. These represent different areas of focus when planning a stay: monastery architecture, a church’s architectural history and individual landmarks can each be explored in their own right.
The Augustinian Monastery in Dolní Ročov
The Augustinian Monastery complex in Dolní Ročov is a protected cultural monument and forms a Baroque ensemble. Its Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary was built to a design by Kilián Ignác Dientzenhofer. The complex also includes a garden, a cemetery, a mortuary and enclosing walls. So the focus is not solely on the church building: the other components are also part of the protected site. The complex is accessible only during a Mass or by prior arrangement with the deanery in Louny. If you would like to visit the monastery, take this access restriction into account when planning your visit.
The Church in Horní Ročov
The Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary stands in Horní Ročov. It was founded in 1355 and rebuilt in 1833. These dates mark two different stages in its architectural history: its foundation and a later reconstruction. In contrast to the Baroque Augustinian complex, the focus here is on the history of a single church building. The church’s tower is a landmark, particularly when viewed from the main road, and is also visible from the south in long-distance views.
Local Landmarks Between the Square and the Road
Even smaller local landmarks have clear points of reference. A lime tree designated as a natural monument stands in Ročov’s square; it is estimated to be about 200 years old. Opposite the church in Ročov stands a Baroque statue of the Madonna dating from 1713. About 200 metres from the square, on the left-hand side of the road towards Louny, is a Baroque niche chapel dedicated to St Vojtěch. The natural monument, statue and chapel are thus associated with different local points of reference: the square, the church and the road towards Louny. The details also highlight different aspects: the lime tree’s estimated age, the date of the Madonna statue, and the chapel’s dedication and location.
Routes and Further Points of Interest
A specific route is also provided for planning your walk: a green-marked hiking trail connects the bus stop in Ročov with the monastery in Dolní Ročov over a distance of about 1 km. This short stretch can therefore be considered a link between the bus stop and the monastery. The Stezka Panny Marie Področovské educational trail presents the historical and natural sights in the area around Ročov, within Džbán Nature Park. Unlike the individual buildings, the trail focuses on the surrounding area, bringing history and nature together.
