Libčeves offers three distinct perspectives: the Late Romanesque Church of the Beheading of St John the Baptist, the history of Zámek Libčeves and the nature around Mlýnský vrch south of the village. Building history, local history and landscape appeal to different interests. For your stay, you can consider whether historic architecture, the history of the fortress and castle, or the local plant life should be your main focus.
A church with several building periods
The Church of the Beheading of St John the Baptist is a prominent landmark in Libčeves. It is a Late Romanesque building dating from the 1230s to 1240s; the nave is single-aisled and dates from the second quarter of the same century. Both dates point to the 13th century, but refer to different aspects: the Late Romanesque style and the date of the nave. The presbytery, or chancel, was built considerably later, at the turn of the 1450s and 1460s. Roughly two centuries separate the nave, dated to the 13th century, from the 15th-century presbytery. This sequence of dates makes the church’s different building phases tangible.
Fortress and castle: two points of reference in local history
The distinction between the fortress and the castle is part of the local history of Zámek Libčeves. The original fortress was near the Romanesque church. The castle, by contrast, was built in its present location on the rise in the 14th century by the Žerotín family. Two points of reference are therefore important for understanding the locations: the area around the church, where the original fortress stood, and the rise, where the castle stands. The sequence runs from the early fortress near the church to the castle built by the Žerotín family in the 14th century. Its development can thus be understood in terms of both construction date and location.
Mlýnský vrch and the steppe meadow
A nature description updated in 2016 identifies Mlýnský vrch, a low basalt hill, south of Libčeves. It mentions an extensive steppe meadow on the southwestern slope, where rare and protected plants grow. The location and aspect provide specific details: the hill lies south of the village, and the meadow is on its southwestern slope. While building history is the focus at the church and castle, here the attention turns to the landscape and plant life. For anyone treating culture and landscape as distinct interests, this offers a clear thematic complement to local history.
Cultural events with set dates
The Libčevecké slavnosti on 19 July 2025 featured a cultural program, refreshments at stands and in the restaurant, market stalls, face painting for children, a tombola, a bouncy castle, carousel rides and other attractions. The Kinematograf bratří Čadíků offered a different format: from 28 to 31 July 2026, films were screened after dark by the pond in Libčeves. A festival scheduled for one day and film screenings over a four-day period thus represent two different cultural offerings. Both dates have now passed. If events are important to your trip, check the dates for your planned visit in advance.
