Slavětín can be explored through very different places: a protected church complex with Early Gothic architecture, an octagonal chapel above the village and a nature trail about 7.5 kilometres long between Slavětín and Peruc. The area also has a literary history and events throughout the year. When planning your visit, you can choose whether to focus on religious architecture, nature or a particular occasion.
Church of Saint James the Greater
The protected complex of the Church of Saint James the Greater comprises more than just the church building: it includes the former cemetery, an enclosing wall with two gates, the steps leading up to the church and a statue of Saint John of Nepomuk. These features give the site a clear architectural layout, which becomes apparent when viewing the ensemble as a whole.
The church itself is an Early Gothic building. Its long presbytery ends in a polygonal shape; the nave has three aisles and a hall-like layout. The presbytery features wall paintings depicting scenes from the lives of saints. Choral concerts are also traditionally held in the church.
A chapel above Slavětín
The Chapel of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary was completed in 1677 as an octagonal central-plan building. Its design differs distinctly from that of the Early Gothic church: here, the focus is on an octagonal building arranged around a central space. The chapel lies above Slavětín, in a spot with expansive views across the landscape.
Inside, inscriptions and fragments bearing coats of arms from 1683 and 1747 have been preserved. They are the last surviving remnants of the once-rich interior furnishings. The dates 1683 and 1747 indicate when the surviving inscriptions and coat-of-arms fragments were made.
Literary history and a distinctive stone
The Konstantin Biebl exhibition in the so-called birthplace commemorates the poet Konstantin Biebl, his uncle, the poet Arnošt Ráž (1884–1925), and Biebl’s friend, the prose writer Karel Konrád (1899–1971). The exhibition opened in 1955 and reopened in 1979 after the building was reconstructed. It is accessible only by prior arrangement with the local municipal office, so contact them before planning a visit.
Another notable feature is the Baba stone, at a crossroads in the fields behind Slavětín. It bears a metal cross. Its original placement and the historical circumstances are uncertain.
A nature trail through fields, meadows and forests
The Naučná stezka nature trail runs for about 7.5 kilometres between Slavětín and Peruc, passing through fields, meadows and forests. Nine stops mark the route; there is also a separate information board in the settlement of Kystra. The approximate length and types of landscape give you a practical guide when choosing between an outing along the trail and a visit focused on architectural and cultural monuments.
Events throughout the year
A carnival is traditionally held in Slavětín in spring. The Předjaří v Poohří walking event also takes place every spring. In summer, you can take part in the Memoriál Stanislava Kučery fire-sports event; the Slavětínská pouť pilgrimage fair and a football tournament are also held in summer. Rodinná farma Suchý hosts harvest celebrations every year. The events therefore differ both in season and in character, ranging from a group walk and traditional customs to sport and a harvest festival.
If you want to plan your trip around a particular event, check the exact dates in advance. Prior contact with the municipal office is essential if you want to visit the exhibition. The church, chapel and nature trail also offer different options for planning: architecture and preserved furnishings, expansive views of the landscape, or a route through fields, meadows and forests.
