Žatec reveals itself through the history of hop growing as well as through the buildings that shape the cityscape. In the extraordinary silhouette of the UNESCO World Heritage ensemble, vertical hop-drying towers stand beside the tall chimneys of the sulphur chambers. You can therefore focus your stay on hop culture or include exhibitions on the history of the city and region. The attractions offer different perspectives, from the history of hop growing to individual examples of architecture.
Hop culture: from cultivation to buildings
The Žatec Hop Museum covers 4,000 m² and traces the development of hop growing from the early Middle Ages to the present day. This broad timespan makes cultivation the common thread. The museum is housed in a technical monument, an example of industrial functional architecture from the late 19th century. The exhibition and the building thus offer two related but distinct perspectives: on hop growing and on architecture designed for industrial use.
The Renaissance malt house complements the topic with a permanent exhibition on malting and archaeological finds. In an interactive exhibition, you can also make your own pencil. This activity offers a different focus from the Hop Museum’s historical overview: here, trying things out for yourself is part of the visit.
For children, the Hop Museum offers the game “Cesta chmelového skřítka Hopa”; participants receive a small gift at the end. As visitor offerings may change, check in advance whether the game is currently available.
Museums and buildings that tell the story of the city
The K. A. Polánka Regional Museum explores the history of the area around Žatec through unique collections. The visitor programme for 2026 divides the museum visit into four tours. The tour of the main building includes the exhibition “Žatecký stroj času” (“Žatec Time Machine”). As the exhibition layout may change, it is a good idea to check the latest information about the tours before your visit.
The reconstructed synagogue brings together several architectural features: an elaborately decorated interior, a gallery and a rabbi’s house. It also hosts a permanent exhibition devoted to the region’s Jewish history. A visit therefore takes in not only the building’s individual features, but also a clearly defined topic in regional history.
The Meder House also turns the focus to the city itself. It is one of the oldest and most valuable burgher houses in Žatec and features interactive exhibitions on the city’s history. Together with the Regional Museum’s collections and the exhibition in the synagogue, it offers another way to explore the city’s history—this time in a historic burgher house.
Cityscape and practical visitor information
The city skyline offers a useful point of reference for anyone interested in the architectural traces of the hop industry: hop-drying towers and the tall chimneys of the sulphur chambers define its vertical profile. A guided tour of the Hop Lighthouse offers a different perspective on Žatec. It uses an elevator with 3D projection and provides views of the city.
If you are travelling by e-bike, the Temple of Hops and Beer has a charging station. Universal, Bosch and Shimano charging cables can be borrowed there. As cable availability and the guided tour schedule may change, check these details before your visit.
