Those choosing Zálužice for a culture-focused break can plan their stay around specific architectural landmarks: Stekník is characterised by its preserved Baroque townscape and castle, alongside a striking bridge over the Ohře and agricultural architecture in Rybňany. When choosing a holiday apartment, consider whether the castle and garden, local history, bridge construction or rural architecture matter most to you.
Stekník Castle and the Baroque Townscape
The historic centre of Stekník has retained its original Baroque form to this day. Since the Czech Ministry of Culture’s Decree No. 249/95 of 22 September 1995, Stekník has been a village conservation area; when the decree was issued, it was the only village conservation area in the then Louny District. The castle adds another architectural dimension: it is one of the most significant Rococo buildings in Bohemia and is surrounded by an Italian-style terraced garden.
Restored interiors in the castle are open to the public. The visitor tour presents the castle as it was during the time of its last private owners, the family of Swiss consul Gerold Déteindre. Thus, alongside the preserved form of the town centre, the interiors and the historical perspective offered by the tour are also a focus. A historical tour of the area around the castle explores the history of the village and the castle, as well as notable figures and monuments in the region. It therefore offers a different focus from the tour of the interiors.
Chapel, Farmhouses and Rybňany
At the southern edge of Zálužice stands the Baroque Chapel of St John of Nepomuk, which was remodelled in the 19th century. At the edge of Zálužice, Farmhouse No. 6 also displays features of folk Baroque. Together, the two buildings illustrate different aspects of local architecture: sacred architecture with later alterations, and an agricultural building with folk-Baroque features.
In Rybňany, opposite the farmhouse, a damaged Baroque statue of St Barbara dating from 1719 stands on a double plinth. An agricultural complex has also been preserved there. It comprises residential buildings, a barn, a drying facility and stables; the group of barns dates from the early 19th century. The cone-shaped icehouse is especially striking, as this type of structure is exceptionally rare in the region. Those interested in rural architecture will therefore find not just individual buildings here, but also various parts of an agricultural ensemble.
The Bridge over the Ohře and Routes through the Surrounding Area
The landmark of Zálužice is a three-span reinforced-concrete bridge over the Ohře. It was built in 1934 and extensively reconstructed in 2010 and 2011. The bridge adds an engineering feature alongside the Baroque and rural monuments: its description specifies a clear structural form and year of construction, as well as the later period of reconstruction.
The routes also offer different themes. The historical tour of the area around the castle explores the history of the village and the castle and provides information about notable figures and monuments in the region. The “Cestou chmele” route leads through hop fields in the area of the Hop Research Institute. This gives visitors a choice of distinct focuses for their stay: history and monuments on the one hand, and the hop-growing landscape on the other.
