Obora offers a range of reasons to visit: walks by the river, a long-standing Children’s Day tradition and local cultural history. This makes the town appealing to travelers who want to combine outdoor activities with a local custom or a cultural connection. Which aspect takes center stage depends on whether you give more weight to trails, a festival or art.
Walks and getting around
The Lososí educational trail was created to support leisure activities and adds interest to walks along the Ohře through Obora. The section of the trail in Obora connects to the route along the Ohře that runs through Louny and the municipalities of Vršovice and Černčice.
Obora is also included in the “Na kole i pěšky” cycling tourism app. The app lists several routes in the area, as well as points of interest, attractions and monuments. These provide two different ways to find your bearings: the educational trail is a specific local resource for leisure and walks, while the app brings together several routes and destinations in the surrounding area. Check that the app is available before you travel.
The “Vodník” celebration
Obora’s traditional “Vodník” Children’s Day celebration has been held for more than 55 years. Its history includes a change of name and location: it was first held under the name “Pod kaštany,” and later at the “Pod Babkami” grounds by the Ohře. The program includes performances by sword fighters, a puppet theater and competitions for children. The highlight is the arrival of water spirits on the river and the distribution of chocolate coins. If you plan to travel specifically for the celebration, check the exact date in advance.
Art and heritage preservation
The Church of St. Catherine in Obora u Loun is listed in the register of monuments under number 43326/5-1110. Another cultural theme is “Mirvaldova Obora.” The fifth gathering of artists and art lovers was announced for August 2, 2025, as a traditional event honoring the prominent Czech painter Vladislav Mirvald. The planned venues were the multifunctional house No. 26 and the “Pod Babkami” natural area by the Ohře. The planned creative workshops included painting, drawing, acrylic painting on canvas, mixed media, pencil and pen drawing, and making prints and bookmarks.
Planning your trip
For your trip planning, you can organize the topics around two questions: Are you looking for a clearly local walk, or would you like an overview of several routes and sights in the surrounding area? The educational trail and the app offer different ways to help you find your bearings. For the cultural events, it helps to compare their timing: “Vodník” is a tradition spanning more than 55 years, while the workshop details relate to the fifth edition of “Mirvaldova Obora,” announced for August 2, 2025. This makes it possible to distinguish the long-standing festival from a dated art gathering. If you plan to travel specifically for “Vodník,” check the event date in advance.
