Vrbno nad Lesy combines an early Gothic church with Baroque architectural features and a local history dating back to 1143. For a stay focused on architecture and historic places of remembrance, the village offers a clear thematic focus. Anyone looking for a holiday apartment for a culturally and historically themed stay can use the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, the rectory complex, cemeteries and the U40 as specific points of reference when planning their trip.

Local History Since 1143

Vrbno nad Lesy was first mentioned in writing in 1143. In the same year, Prince Vladislav gave Vrbno to Strahov Monastery. In the Middle Ages, the village was divided between St. George’s Convent, the Premonstratensians from Strahov and the abbess of Panenský Týnec. The year 1143 thus marks both the first written mention and the donation; in the Middle Ages, several religious institutions also held a stake in the village. This sequence gives the local history a specific timeframe.

Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and Rectory

The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary is an early Gothic church dating from before 1321, and was also remodelled in the Baroque style. It is a single-nave church; the presbytery is narrower than the nave, and both parts have a rectangular floor plan. A prismatic tower with an onion dome adjoins the north side. The combination of its early Gothic classification and Baroque remodelling draws attention to more than one building phase. The floor plan, the proportions of the nave and presbytery, and the shape of the tower each offer distinct architectural points of interest.

The Baroque rectory complex defines the centre of Vrbno nad Lesy and borders the northeastern side of the square. The ensemble includes the rectory, an outbuilding, a gate and an enclosing wall with another gate. The single-storey rectory consists of two rectangular wings set at right angles to one another; the main wing faces the square. The gate has two distinct portals: a larger one with a vaulted round arch and a double-leaf gate, and a smaller, straight-sided portal with a door. The church and rectory thus offer different architectural perspectives: the church draws attention to its floor plan and tower, while the rectory stands out for the layout of its complex and its entrances.

Cemeteries and Places of Remembrance

The cemetery in Vrbno nad Lesy is enclosed by an original boundary wall and contains numerous old Czech gravestones. The grave of Václav Kozák is also located there. The inscription describes him as an Olympic champion, European champion and Rower of the Century. Together with Pavel Schmidt, Kozák won Olympic gold in the double sculls in Rome. The grave and its inscription connect the cemetery’s history with a specific place of sporting remembrance.

A Jewish cemetery with gravestones dating from the 18th century is located in the cadastral area of Hřivčice, on a field path between Vrbno nad Lesy and Hřivčice. This site adds a distinct historical context to the area’s cemetery heritage and lies outside the built-up area of Vrbno nad Lesy.
