Nepomyšl Castle stands out for its unusual geometry: a 16-sided polygon on the outside and a nine-sided one in the courtyard. It is joined by a Gothic church with medieval wall paintings and marked trails. Nepomyšl thus offers concrete starting points for a stay that can focus on culture and outdoor activities in different ways.

Nepomyšl Castle and St Nicholas Church

The castle’s construction history goes back to a fortress that was probably founded in the first half of the 14th century. This cautious dating is part of the building’s history: its founding date is not presented as certain. Its unusual shape can also be described precisely: 16 sides on the outside and nine in the courtyard. However, the castle is not open to the public. Do not plan a public tour, and check access before visiting.

Another way to explore Nepomyšl’s history is through St Nicholas Church. The Gothic church was founded in the mid-14th century. Inside are fragments of Gothic wall paintings from the 14th and 15th centuries. A visit is possible by prior arrangement with the municipal office, so make arrangements in advance. This makes the church visit distinctly different from a visit to the castle: the church can be visited by arrangement, whereas the castle is not open to the public.

In front of the church stands a Baroque statue of St Nicholas dating from 1907. The saint is considered the patron saint of the market town of Nepomyšl. Another dated work of art stands by the road towards Brody: on the right is a statue of the Expectant Virgin Mary, erected in 1712. Both works are characterised by their connection to Nepomyšl and their different dates of origin; one statue stands in front of the church, the other on the road to Brody.

Other monuments and local features

On the outskirts of Nepomyšl, near the kaolin works, a protected lime tree stands on a hill. It is estimated to be about 320 years old. The age is an approximation, while its status as a protected tree is part of its description. Nepomyšl is thus home to different forms of cultural heritage: a castle with a polygonal shape, a church with wall paintings, two dated statues and a protected tree. Each feature has its own connection to the place; together, they do not form a set sightseeing route.

Hiking and cycling

A blue-marked hiking trail leads from Nepomyšl via Dvérce, Dětaň and Kružínský vrch to Kryry. The sequence of places named and the destination, Kryry, provide a clear guide for choosing a route. No walking time or distance is specified. If you plan to follow the trail, check the current markings and route beforehand.

For cyclists, two further details should be distinguished: Cycle Route 35 runs along the western edge of Nepomyšl’s cadastral area; Cycle Route 3080 is in the immediate vicinity of the town. These are different geographical references, not an indication that the two routes are connected. You should also double-check the route numbers when planning.

Bus services for planning your day

Public bus services in Nepomyšl run on weekdays only; weekday services are directed towards Podbořany. This is important if you want to coordinate a visit to the church by prior arrangement or a stay involving hiking and cycling plans. Check the timetable for your planned travel day rather than assuming there will be a bus at the weekend. The weekday schedule and the direction towards Podbořany describe the available planning options; they do not replace checking a specific service.

Choosing where to stay therefore involves a clear trade-off: the castle and the church differ in accessibility, while visiting the church requires prior arrangement. The marked hiking trail passes through several named places on its way to Kryry; the cycle routes are each described in relation to Nepomyšl in their own way. Before looking for a holiday apartment, you can decide whether you are more interested in local history, a particular route or a combination of the two.
