The Beroun region lies along the Berounka River, between the forests of Křivoklátsko and the limestone landscape of the Bohemian Karst. The river, forests and karst give a trip here different facets: the landscape and nature beckon outdoors, while castles, historic town centres and traditional crafts tell the story of the region’s culture. If you want to discover Beroun District, you can make these contrasts the guiding thread of your plans.

Forests, River and Karst

Křivoklátsko Protected Landscape Area is 62 percent forested, predominantly with broadleaf and mixed forests. It also includes part of the former Beroun District. This gives the landscape a historical dimension: today’s natural setting and former administrative boundaries tell different stories about the same area. The Berounka, meanwhile, is considered a gently flowing river that is navigable year-round and suitable for beginners. This makes a water-based activity an option alongside walking and visits to cultural sites, without requiring any particular itinerary.

Castles and Historic Places

Among the Beroun region’s attractions are Karlštejn and Křivoklát Castles. Karlštejn was founded by Charles IV in 1348 to house royal treasures, relics and the Crown Jewels of the Holy Roman Empire. Its founding story offers a tangible introduction to the history of rulership and religion. In Beroun itself, the historic town centre is protected as an urban conservation area; its well-preserved medieval fortifications are a defining feature of its historic character.

Svatý Jan pod Skalou also brings together cultural history and landscape. This place in the Bohemian Karst is a pilgrimage site and tourist destination, and is associated with a former Benedictine monastery and the hermit Ivan. A viewpoint on Svatojánská skála looks out over the monastery complex and the Loděnice Valley. This makes it possible to explore the history of the place together with its location in the valley, rather than treating the two separately.

Caves and Industrial Heritage

The Koněprusy Caves extend across three levels, with 2,050 metres of passages and cave chambers explored so far. The public visitor route covers 620 metres and takes about an hour. Check seasonal access before your visit. In addition to their geological significance, the caves are important protected habitats for bats, including the greater horseshoe bat. A visit therefore draws attention both to the underground landscape and to its importance as a habitat.

Near Koněprusy, at Zlatý kůň, is Dům přírody Českého krasu, a visitor centre for the protected landscape area. An open-air museum of industrial history is being developed at Solvayovy lomy, focusing on the quarrying and transport of limestone. Visitors can ride a small train, see a cableway exhibition and enter an underground gallery. As operations may be seasonal, it is advisable to check visitor access in advance.

Crafts, Routes and Trip Planning

Guided tours of the Rückl glassworks introduce traditional glassmaking techniques, including glassblowing. Advance booking may be required for a tour. Beroun has also long hosted a pottery market on the main square, in spring and autumn. If the market is an important reason for your trip, check the exact dates.

The scale of possible activities also varies considerably: the St. Ludmila Trail is about 132 kilometres long and divided into eleven stages, three of which pass through the Beroun region. The cave route, by contrast, is a roughly one-hour visit covering 620 metres. These details help distinguish a longer route from a visit that takes a manageable amount of time. For public transport, the Krasobus route connects Karlštejn railway station with Srbsko, Beroun–Hostim, Svatý Jan pod Skalou, Loděnice, Bubovice, Mořina, Mořinka and Hlásná Třebaň. Check that the service is currently operating before you travel.

You can shape your trip around what interests you most: medieval fortifications and castle history, limestone landscapes and caves, a guided craft tour or a longer route through the Beroun region. Its variety lies not in a single excursion, but in the different perspectives it offers on landscape, culture and history.
