Otmíče brings together a prominent hill, archaeological traces and an architectural focal point in the village centre. Otmíčská hora is classified as an important archaeological site in category ÚAN I. Its summit lies at 401 metres in the Hořovická pahorkatina and forms a landmark. On the village square, the Chapel of St. John of Nepomuk adds a second, architectural focal point to the landscape. This means you can explore the area according to different interests: focusing on fortifications and terrain, on rock and plant life, or on a single building within the built-up area.

Archaeological traces on Otmíčská hora

The small La Tène hillfort near Otmíče covers about 2.8 hectares and is surrounded by stone ramparts. The complex includes an acropolis and possibly outer baileys to the northeast and east. The ramparts at the Otmíčská hora hillfort lie to the north and east, are clearly visible and are 4–5 metres wide. Archaeological finds also point to earlier settlement in Otmíče. This brings into focus not only the shape and extent of a fortification, but also the early settlement of the area.

Rock, quarrying and plant life

The geological site of Otmíčská hora is 500 metres south of Otmíče. An accessible tourist trail leads there from the road; check the current trail conditions before your visit. The site features basalt rock. An abandoned wall-stone quarry is located at the summit and on the steep southwestern and southern slopes of Otmíčská hora. The hill is also home to heat-loving plants of the rocky steppes and woodland plants of the woodland vegetation growing on diabase. Geology and plant life thus complement the archaeological themes with other specific features of the hill.

Chapel and hiking trail

The Chapel of St. John of Nepomuk stands on the village square in the built-up area of Otmíče. The masonry building has a rectangular floor plan and a three-sided termination. A small bell turret rises from the ridge of the roof. For those interested in architecture, the striking comparison lies in these distinct forms: a rectangular building with a three-sided termination and the small turret above the roof ridge. The chapel therefore offers a different focus from the terrain and ramparts on Otmíčská hora.

A marked blue hiking trail leads from Žebrák via Chlustina, Praskolesy and Otmíče to Lochovice. Check the current trail markings on site if you plan to use this route for your hike. This route connecting several villages should be distinguished from the trail to the geological site, which leads from the road to a destination 500 metres south of Otmíče. Keep these two route descriptions separate when planning.

The difference is clear when choosing what to focus on: the chapel draws attention to the form of a single building. At Otmíčská hora, the focus is on archaeological findings, geology and plant life. The blue hiking trail, in turn, places Otmíče along a route connecting villages from Žebrák to Lochovice. Architecture, landscape and hiking thus offer different ways to explore the area.
