Tmaň lies in a small hollow southwest of Beroun, on the edge of the Český kras Protected Landscape Area. The château, church and smaller historic landmarks shape the town’s history; educational trails lead to chapels, karst formations and a natural monument. When planning your trip, you can choose between architectural and historical discoveries in the town and trails through the surrounding countryside.

The château and traces of local history

The château in Tmaň is a three-winged, three-storey building. Rococo elements articulate its façade. The painter M. Aleš visited the château between 1909 and 1912. He found there the landscape of his later years and drew several pictures of Tmaň. The connection between the building and the artist’s story gives the château a firm place in local cultural history.

The site of St. George’s Church also tells of a long past. The church stands alone outside the village at a crossroads, surrounded by a cemetery. Archaeological finds identify the site as an ancient sacred place at the centre of an extensive burial ground, whose origins date back to the Bronze Age. The significance of this place therefore extends far beyond the history of the church building.

Further details can be found at other spots in the village: a cross and a bell tower were erected by the pond in 1899. A Gothic portal survives on the ground floor of a single-storey building with a small tower; the building has yet to be reconstructed. These different architectural features and memorials offer several distinct points of interest on a walk through Tmaň’s history.

Educational trails and the chapel on Koukolova hora

The Koukolova hora–Kotýz–Koněprusy educational trail crosses Koukolova hora, where you will find the niche chapel of St. Blaise and a former limestone quarry. The hiking trail is 5.2 kilometres long and has 13 stops with information panels. These details provide a concrete framework for planning your route; seasonal conditions can change, so it is advisable to check local trail conditions before setting out.

The chapel connects the landscape with the history of the Tmaň estate. Antonín Karel Mudroch had it built in 1832; at the time, he was rector of Charles University and owner of the estate. Older maps showed the chapel as a ruin before it was fully restored in 2010. The educational trail thus brings together a historic wayside chapel and traces of former limestone quarrying, while each of these stops tells a different story.

Hiking destinations around Tmaň

Near Tmaň, an educational trail leads from Slavíky to the Kotýz National Natural Monument. Notable karst formations and the protected flora and fauna of the rocky steppes define its natural features. Slavíky is close to Tmaň; the route description starts there, not in the town centre. If you plan to visit the natural monument, you can distinguish this nature-focused part of your trip from the buildings and historic sites in the village.

Another described hiking route starts at Králův Dvůr-Popovice railway station on line 170 between Prague and Pilsen. Yellow trail markers lead from there to Koukolova hora and on to the Koněprusy Caves. Check the trail markers locally before setting out. The route provides its own guidance for getting there and hiking; its starting point should not be confused with the centre of Tmaň.

When deciding how to plan your trip, you can weigh Tmaň according to your interests: the château, church and smaller historic buildings provide a cultural focus, while the educational trails, former quarry and Kotýz bring hiking and the karst landscape to the fore. If you would like to include both, the specific route descriptions can help you plan the excursions and visit to the village separately, rather than assuming a particular walking time or a shared circuit based on their thematic connection.
