Nižbor Castle and Celtic history

Nižbor Castle was built in the mid-13th century on a rocky promontory above the confluence of the Berounka River and the Habrový potok stream. The promontory and confluence pinpoint the site, while the construction date provides a historical reference point. King Přemysl Otakar II is considered a possible builder. The castle is an immovable cultural monument.

Another historical perspective takes you to the area around Stradonice. Celtic settlement shaped the area around 500 BC; the Celtic oppidum at Stradonice covered approximately 90.3 hectares. The area was probably divided into an acropolis and an outer bailey. The figure describes the size of the oppidum, while the presumed division refers to a possible internal layout. The oppidum’s fortifications were rebuilt twice, and their remains have survived only in fragments. The oppidum was probably an important trading and production center in Central Europe at the time.

The castle and oppidum offer different ways to explore cultural history: the castle is notable for its construction date and heritage status, while Stradonice stands out for its Celtic settlement, archaeological layout and probable historical role. The Celtic settlement around 500 BC predates the construction of Nižbor Castle in the mid-13th century by a considerable margin.

Celtic culture and glassmaking

The Information Center of Celtic Culture at Nižbor Castle is open every year from May to November. If the center is important to your stay, this seasonal opening period provides a clear guide when choosing when to travel. Multimedia projections present the Celts’ migrations through Europe, their religion, craftsmanship and daily life.

At the Rückl glassworks, guided tours explain individual production processes and traditional glassmaking techniques. You can also buy an experience at the glassworks or a glass-grinding experience in the factory shop. The entire Rückl glassworks site is accessible to people with reduced mobility. While the Celtic cultural center focuses on Celtic culture, Rückl focuses on glassmaking and craftsmanship, so the two offerings provide different highlights within the cultural program.

Hiking and scenery

A red-marked hiking trail runs from Beroun via Zdejcina, Stradonice and Nižbor to Roztoky and Křivoklát. If you plan to follow this route, check its current course before setting out, as trail markings can change. The places named show how the route continues beyond Nižbor, giving the hike a distinct itinerary alongside the cultural and historical attractions.

There is also a site within the Křivoklátsko Protected Landscape Area in the municipality of Nižbor. This landscape adds another perspective to your travel planning, alongside the castle, Celtic history and glassmaking.
