The Skanzen Solvayovy lomy open-air museum is dedicated to limestone mining and transport in the Bohemian Karst. It was established in a disused limestone quarry known by the names U Paraplete and Na stydlých vodách. The quarry thus provides the setting for a museum that focuses equally on limestone extraction and transport.
A flat path of about two kilometres leads there from Bubovice; the walk takes around 20 minutes. At first, the path is marked as a yellow hiking trail with a hammer symbol, after which a field track leads to the quarry. Local markings and access conditions may change; check the information before setting out.
Chapel Ruins and Architecture
The ruins of the Chapel of St Adalbert stand in Bubovice. They are considered a notable example of small-scale sacred architecture in Bohemia and were declared a cultural monument in 2016. The chapel was commissioned by Emilián Koterovský, abbot of Svatý Jan, who tasked Kryštof Dientzenhofer with its design and construction. The chapel thus offers a way to understand both its architectural significance and the historical role of its patron.
Nature Trail and Routes
The Dendrologická stezka Bubovice dendrological nature trail has one station and is designed for a visit of about an hour. A gravel path around 1.5 kilometres long leads from Bubovice to the trail. The time estimate describes the intended visit, while the kilometre figure refers to the approach. As official route details may be updated, check the information before your visit.
Nature Around Bubovice
The Karlštejn National Nature Reserve also includes the cadastral area of Bubovice. The reserve is an extensive woodland landscape shaped by the valleys of the Budňanský, Bubovický and Loděnice streams. Its landscape features include geological profiles, palaeontological sites, and surface and underground karst formations. The reserve was awarded the Council of Europe Diploma for Protected Areas in 2000; the award was renewed in 2020.
Below Bubovice, the area being restored as a wetland is located in the floodplain of the Bubovický potok stream. It lies within the Český kras Protected Landscape Area and the Karlštejn National Nature Reserve. The wetland is intended to function as a periodic habitat: it should fill with water after autumn rain, spring snowmelt or heavy rainfall; during drier periods, it may dry out completely. The restoration helps expand a habitat suitable for amphibians to live and reproduce.
The Bubovický dub oak was designated a memorial tree in 1986. Records from 2009 give the pedunculate oak’s age as 240 years, its height as 20 metres and its trunk circumference as 375 centimetres. Nearby, in the Čeřinka quarry, is Arnoldka Cave. At 111 metres below the surface, it is considered the deepest known cave in Bohemia.
The Bubovice Waterfalls on the Bubovický potok stream are also nearby. They are particularly impressive in winter, spring or after rain; in dry years, they may have no water for extended periods. The easiest way to reach the waterfalls is from Srbsko via the blue-marked hiking trail. As trail conditions may change, check the markings before setting out.
Events and Planning
Traditional events in Bubovice include the children’s masked carnival, Maškarní karneval pro děti, and the witch-burning event, Pálení čarodějnic. Exact dates and programmes may vary; check them before planning your stay around them.
For day planning, the time estimates for the two routes should be read differently: around 20 minutes applies to the walk to the Skanzen, while about an hour is intended for visiting the nature trail. Conditions at the waterfalls depend on the season and rainfall, while events depend on their respective dates and programmes. If you are considering Bubovice when looking for a holiday apartment, these differences can help you match your planned activities to your preferred timeframe.
