Svinaře reveals its history across several periods: the castle’s story stretches from a probably medieval fortress to the building constructed in 1766; the chapel and the mineral water tradition add their own historical highlights. At the same time, Žába Pond, a multi-purpose sports field and the surrounding countryside offer different ways to spend your time here. If you’re looking for a holiday apartment, you can first decide whether to focus on cultural history, sports or time outdoors.
Svinaře Castle and its building history
Svinaře Castle stands on the site of a fortress that probably dates from the first half of the 14th century. Antonín Maschek of Maasburg had the castle itself built in 1766 in the farmyard; its grounds included an extensive garden and park. The fortress, dated with appropriate caution, and the castle, dated to a specific year, represent two different phases of construction: the medieval reference concerns the predecessor site, not the castle built in 1766. Despite the ongoing reconstruction, the castle complex offers interesting interiors and a beautiful castle park for excursions and cultural experiences. As the reconstruction status may change, check it before planning your visit.
Chapel and festival on 28 September
The public Chapel of St. Wenceslas was built in 1901 to replace the Chapel of the Holy Cross in Svinaře Castle, which had burned down. It was consecrated on 28 September 1901. Its history therefore belongs to a later period than the castle’s construction and also recalls the destroyed predecessor in the castle. The Svinařské posvícení festival also takes place on 28 September. If you’d like to plan your visit around the festival, check the programme for the specific date.
Spring and mineral water tradition
A document from 1840 describes the healing properties of the spring in Svinaře. A well and two basins are also mentioned at the spring site. Around 1900, a carriage came from Karlovy Vary twice a week to fill the mineral water into special bottles and transport it away. This distinguishes two separate chapters in the mineral water tradition: the description of the spring and the regular transport of bottled water.
Žába Pond and sports activities
Žába Pond hosts numerous social and sporting events; dates for individual events may vary. In winter, people play hockey and skate there, depending on the weather. Two different planning considerations can help you choose when to visit: for events, check the specific date; for hockey and skating, check the weather conditions.
Svinaře also has a multi-purpose sports field with artificial turf, suitable for hockeyball, floorball, nohejbal, volleyball and tennis. The activities described therefore differ in location and type: winter exercise by the pond and several sports on the field. Conditions of use may change, so check them before planning a sports visit.
Getting there and spending time in nature
Svinaře is 4 km from the main Prague–Beroun railway line and can be reached by bus or on foot from Řevnice and Zadní Třebaň. Check bus frequency before you set off. Svinaře is also a popular destination for cottage owners, cyclists and tourists who head into the surrounding countryside from here. The range of things to do therefore extends beyond architectural history to include cycling and time outdoors.
