The Chapel of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Doubravka castle site are two distinct historical points of reference for a stay in Újezd. There is also a memorial, recurring events, and bus and rail connections. These provide concrete cultural sites, landscape and travel connections through which to get your bearings in the area.
The Chapel’s History and the Castle Site
Újezd was first mentioned in a written record in 1399 under the name “Oujezd čtyř konšelů.” Another precisely dated point of reference is the Chapel of the Sacred Heart of Jesus: it was opened and consecrated on 9 July 1899. It was built by Jiří Štefan, who came from farmhouse No. 6. The dates mark different chapters: 1399 is the year of Újezd’s first written mention, while 1899 marks the chapel’s opening and consecration. This distinction provides a chronological framework if you are interested in the area’s history.
The Doubravka castle site is well preserved and circular, with a diameter of about 14 metres. A ditch and rampart surround the site; no visible remains of walls remain. It is located near the Doubravka forester’s lodge, about 1.5 kilometres west of Újezd. At Doubravka, the focus is on the form preserved in the terrain, while the chapel’s history is associated with a specific date of opening and consecration.
Memorial Site, Events and Landscape
The former partisan shelter has been filled in; a memorial now stands in its place. A blue-marked tourist route continues along a forest path to the partisan bunker. If you plan to take this route, check the markings on site before setting out.
Every year, the summer dance venue hosts mainly rock concerts, as well as cultural and sporting events for children. If you want to plan your stay around a specific programme, check the dates for your travel period. SK Doubravan Újezd also has a sports complex with a grass pitch and players’ facilities, as well as the “U Meruny” clubhouse.
More than half of Újezd’s area is forested. This proportion of woodland gives the municipality a distinctive landscape. Together with the individual historical points of reference, it paints a picture that encompasses both the landscape and specific places.
Travel and Finding Accommodation
Buses provide direct connections from Újezd to Prague and surrounding villages. The nearest rail connection is at Cerhovice station. Check the timetables for your travel dates before choosing a holiday apartment. This lets you choose accommodation based on the places you actually plan to visit during your stay and take transport connections into account. The right connection for you depends on where you want to travel and when you are going.
