In the Český kras Protected Landscape Area, karst scenery and a long religious history come together in Svatý Jan Pod Skalou. The village offers two distinct focuses: the Svatojánský Circuit, with its steep ascent, and cultural and historical sites ranging from the Benedictine monastery to the museum. When planning your stay, this distinction can help you decide how much time to devote to hiking and how much to local history.

Karst Landscape and Trails

The Svatojánský Circuit is a four-kilometre loop with eleven stations. It starts at the monastery and follows a steep ascent to the “U kříže” viewpoint on the Skála. The distance gives you an initial idea of the route; the steep ascent is also something to consider when assessing the hike. The trail passes through the karst canyon of the Kačák (Loděnice) stream and takes in the limestone formation known as “kozí hřbety”. Along the route, you will encounter different landscape features of the karst area.

The loop also leads to the Solvayovy lomy open-air museum in the surrounding area. The museum offers an exhibition on limestone mining, a ride on a narrow-gauge railway and a visit to a mine tunnel. If you want to include both the karst landscape and limestone mining in your visit, the loop connects these themes.

Another hiking trail is the Cesta Vojty Náprstka: after the first ascent, it reaches the pilgrimage site of Svatý Jan Pod Skalou. This gives you a choice of different routes: a loop with a stated distance and number of stations, and a hiking trail that reaches the pilgrimage site after an ascent. Trail conditions and markings may change, so check them before setting out.

Monastery, Church and Cave

The Benedictine monastery has stood in Svatý Jan Pod Skalou for almost 1,000 years. The pilgrimage complex is a national cultural monument. The Church of the Nativity of St John the Baptist is an early Baroque building, constructed in 1661 by the architect C. Lurago. The monastery and church offer different historical reference points: the monastery’s presence dates back almost a millennium, while the church has a specific construction date.

The Cave of St Ivan is accessible from the church and is an original karst travertine cave. Its portal is that of an old Renaissance church dedicated to the Virgin Mary. A powerful karst spring emerges from the rock. If you are interested in the design of cultural heritage sites, here you will find not only the monastery and church buildings, but also a combination of cave, rock and historic portal.

Local History and Visitor Information

The Svatojánské Museum is housed in a historic former village school building dating from 1822. Its permanent exhibition is devoted to the history of the village. The museum also preserves a collection of 19th-century embroidery belonging to the local Berger noble family. This gives it a different focus from the religious sites: the museum centres on the history of the village and a specific collection.

The information centre for the Český kras Protected Landscape Area helps visitors find their way around the village and its surrounding area. Opening arrangements are seasonal; check them before you travel if you plan to visit the centre. When choosing your holiday apartment, you can take into account what you want to focus on: hiking with a steep ascent, pilgrimage sites and architecture, or local history at the museum. This way, you can tailor your search to the experiences you want to shape your stay.
