Měňany lies in the Český kras Protected Landscape Area. The stream and the protected area refer to different geographical features: the Stříbrný potok flows through the cadastral area of Měňany, while the Kobyla Nature Reserve extends across the cadastral areas of Suchomasty, Měňany and Koněprusy. This distinction helps you orient yourself between a watercourse within a cadastral area and a protected area that encompasses several cadastral areas.

Kobyla: Geology and Educational Trail

The Kobyla Nature Reserve contains a former quarry with an exposure of the Očkov thrust, visible karst features, and caves of palaeontological and archaeological significance. Here, different aspects of nature and Earth history come together: the quarry reveals a geological exposure, while the karst features and caves are other notable features of the area. For travellers interested in nature from geological and archaeological perspectives, Kobyla is a distinctive highlight.

The nature reserve is part of the Zlatý kůň geological educational trail. When planning your visit, take note of the trail’s restrictions: it is not suitable for cyclists or visitors with prams. The Koněprusy Caves are also nearby attractions around Měňany. Kobyla and the caves are two distinct natural attractions that you can consider separately when choosing your excursions.

Spring and Notable Oak Tree

At the Měňanská vyvěračka, water gradually enters the stream bed along a 250 m stretch between the spring basin and the Koněprusy–Měňany road. This describes a specific course of the water and complements Kobyla’s geological highlights with a spring area. A footpath is listed as the access route to the Měňanská vyvěračka; the access information was last updated in 2021. Check access conditions on site before planning your visit.

Another notable natural feature is the summer oak tree Dub u měňanského mlýna. It grows on the dam of a pond by a former mill above Měňany and was designated a memorial tree in 1986. In 2009, it was recorded as being 260 years old, with a trunk circumference of 395 cm and a height of 22 m. Its measurements may have changed slightly since they were taken; the year indicates when these values were recorded.

Cultural Monuments and Easter Tradition

The cultural monuments also offer visitors several points of interest. The chapel with a bell tower in Měňany is a local cultural monument dating from 1836. The stone cross in Měňany is classified as an immovable cultural monument. The Chapel of St Wenceslas in Tobolka, within the municipality of Měňany, is also an immovable cultural monument. The chapel in the village and the chapel in Tobolka are therefore two separate places to visit within the same municipality.

Měňany holds the traditional Easter rattling event (Velikonoční řehtání). If you would like to plan your trip around this custom, check the dates for the relevant Easter celebration.
