Zajecov can be explored through several clearly distinct themes: the Augustinian monastery of Svatá Dobrotivá in the town centre, architectural heritage in Upper Zaječov, and routes for cyclists and hikers. For a culturally focused stay, the history of the monastery, a specific Rococo painting and vernacular architecture take centre stage. If you would rather spend time outdoors, you can consider Cycle Route 2252 and the hiking route ‘Za podbrdskými roubenkami’ in terms of their respective connections to the town. A cross-country skiing map for Brdy and Podbrdsko also offers a seasonal perspective.

Monastery History and Art

Svatá Dobrotivá is an Augustinian monastery in the centre of Zajecov. Oldřich Zajíc z Valdeka founded the monastery in 1262. The monastery church contains the Rococo painting ‘Prosba Panny Marie k Oldřichovi z Valdeka’ on the high altar, completed by J. P. Molitor in 1745. The monastery was therefore founded in the 13th century, while the painting dates from the 18th century. This chronological distinction separates the history of the monastery from the creation of a specific work of art. The high altar locates the painting within the monastery church, while its Rococo classification identifies its artistic character. For cultural travel planning, this offers two different perspectives: the monastery’s foundation and a later work in its church.

Chapel and Timber Buildings in Upper Zaječov

A chapel was built in Upper Zaječov before 1800. Original timber buildings featuring vernacular architecture have also been preserved there. This part of the cultural heritage differs from the monastery: the focus here is on a single building with a historical date and several surviving examples of vernacular architecture. The chapel adds another architectural highlight to the monastery connection, while the timber buildings also draw attention to a traditional building style. If you are interested in vernacular architecture as well as sacred art, Upper Zaječov offers a distinct thematic perspective.

Cycling and Hiking Routes

Cycle Route 2252 passes through Zajecov and into the Brdy Protected Landscape Area. It thus links a specific route through the town with a connection to the protected area; both points are relevant when planning if you want to combine cycling with a landscape focus. By contrast, the hiking route ‘Za podbrdskými roubenkami’ leads to Zajecov. This is a different relationship to the route: Zajecov lies along the cycling route, while it is the destination of the hiking route. This distinction is useful when choosing between the two activities, as you can decide whether Zajecov should be a stage on a cycling route or the destination of a hike.

Plan Cross-Country Skiing Seasonally

An up-to-date map of cross-country ski trails in the Brdy Protected Landscape Area and Podbrdsko is available. Map availability and trail conditions vary seasonally; check both before travelling. The map covers Brdy and Podbrdsko, providing a geographical framework for winter planning. The trails in these two areas are a distinct seasonal planning consideration alongside the monastery and architectural history.
