Skřipel has a clearly defined profile: a protected cultural landscape, late Baroque architectural history, archaeological sites and marked routes. Each has a distinct focus. The Skřipelská alej is a specific landscape feature, Šance is a site whose interpretation is explicitly open, and the routes offer different ways to get around. This can help you decide whether your interest in choosing a destination lies more in the cultural landscape, local history or one of the activities described.
A protected avenue as a landscape feature
The Skřipelská alej leads west from Osov Castle towards Skřipel. The protected tree-lined avenue is planted exclusively with horse chestnuts (Aesculus hippocastanum); it was first designated as protected on 1 January 1987. It combines a clearly defined landscape feature with a specifically named tree species and a protection status dating back to a precise historical date.
Church and local history
The small late Baroque Church of Saints Simon and Jude stands in the centre of Skřipel, by the road. Its description connects a specific architectural style with its location in the village centre. Another church-related detail is recorded for the period before 1232: the Ostrov Monastery held the right of patronage over the church in Skřipel. Two periods are thus brought together: the building described as late Baroque and a historical legal connection dating back to before 1232. For travellers interested in local history, this offers a precise link between architecture and earlier church history.
Archaeological traces with different interpretations
The significant archaeological site of Šance lies within the cadastral area of Skřipel, southeast of the village in the locality of U Šancí. It consists of square earthwork enclosures covering an area of 105 × 125 metres; the interior is about one metre higher than the surrounding terrain. Its interpretation remains open: it may have been a Celtic sanctuary or a fortification from a historical period. The form of the site is described precisely, but its function remains undetermined.
Skřipel 5 is also an archaeological area. It lies 500 metres southwest of the village on the right bank of the Šiberna and is associated with prehistoric agriculture; it includes archaeological finds that have been confirmed or are considered likely on good grounds. This represents a different focus from Šance: here, the period and the connection to the finds are central, while the function of the earthwork enclosures at Šance remains open.
Circular routes and a named cycle ride
The Podbrdský Čtyřlístek comprises four colour-coded circular walking routes. They pass through Skřipel and the surrounding villages of Lážovice, Vižina and Velký Chlumec; the routes meet in the centre of Osov. Each route is 6–8 km long and is intended primarily for walkers. Trekking bikes or, preferably, mountain bikes are another possible option.
The cycle ride “Vyjížďka za legendárním Horymírem” offers a different kind of excursion. It follows the protected chestnut avenue to Skřipel and then through the village. It continues along road II/115 back to Hostomice railway station. The route layout is key when choosing between the options: the walking option comprises four circular routes that meet in Osov, while the named cycle ride follows the avenue and passes through Skřipel on its way back to Hostomice railway station.
