At Cech, local and mining history come together: the building served as the entrance to an iron ore mine, and the walls on either side reveal a geological cross-section of Krušná hora. Lesní hřbitov adds intricately designed tombs to the history of the area.
Industrial history at Cech
The municipality of Nový Jáchymov was founded in 1810. Its establishment was prompted by the construction of an ironworks with blast furnaces, a foundry and auxiliary facilities. Cech was built in 1812 in the Italian style and served as the entrance to an iron ore mine. The walls on either side of the building reveal the geological cross-section of Krušná hora; the dip and thickness of the ore layers are also visible. The architecture, former function and geological structure thus offer different ways to explore the area's mining history.
The Cech building, formerly the cáchovna, now serves as a restaurant. If you would like to dine there, check the latest visitor information before you arrive.
Lesní hřbitov: funerary art and history
Lesní hřbitov Nový Jáchymov was established in 1831 at the initiative of František Nittinger and is a cultural monument of the Czech Republic. It is still used for burials and is freely accessible to the public. If you are planning to visit the cemetery for a particular occasion, check access beforehand.
Many graves are adorned with intricately designed crosses and tombstones. In a small valley, the A. Mayer family burial site forms a separate group of four monuments. It includes a central Neo-Gothic cast-iron tomb for Antonín Mayer and his wife Johanna Mayerová, née Rumplerová. A large cast-iron crucifix with a corpus also stands in the central area of the cemetery.
Landscape and trails
Nový Jáchymov lies in the Křivoklátsko Protected Landscape Area, which is also a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Habrový potok flows along the edge of the municipality, where a cascade of three ponds has formed. For a different kind of outing, the Naučná stezka Krušná hora – Hudlický vrch nature trail runs nearby to the Máminka lookout tower. Marked cycle route 0053 (Pod Kolnou–Otročiněves) passes through the municipal area. The nature trail has a named destination in the lookout tower, while the cycle route is located within the municipality by virtue of passing through its area. As trail conditions can change, check them before setting out on the nature trail.
Fishing and planning your journey
Fishing is permitted at Prostřední Pond in the cadastral area of Nový Jáchymov. Fishing is prohibited from the dam and in the spawning area. As a rule, only a single hook is allowed; an exception applies to spin fishing. As local fishing regulations can change, check them again before fishing.
Nový Jáchymov can be reached by a regular bus service via Beroun and Králův Dvůr. Check the timetable before your trip. If you are travelling by car, ask a local source about parking options before setting off.
