Libomyšl brings together archaeological, architectural and landscape points of interest. At its heart is Hrádek, with its oval fortified area; other points of interest include a chapel and cross ensemble, the Litavka, a former watermill and the Hrádecká lípa. These places and names represent different kinds of history: a presumed medieval origin, village architecture, a map entry from 1727 and a precisely dated protection event. A stay focused on cultural history can be planned around these different periods and topics.
Hrádek: fortified area and early history
The fortified area of Hrádek is oval and measures about 35 × 22 metres. A ditch protects it to the south, west and east. These measurements give a concrete idea of its shape without making the site seem extensive: its described layout is clearly defined. Hrádek is now protected as an archaeological feature. The fortified manor of Hrádek u Libomyšle and the neighbouring village were presumably founded in the first half of the 14th century. This cautious dating points to a period rather than an exact year of foundation. Those interested in the early history of villages and fortifications will find a clear historical point of reference here. The date of foundation and its present-day protected status answer different questions: one indicates the presumed origin, while the other states its current protection status.
Chapel on the village green
The “Kaple a kříž” ensemble is located roughly halfway along the elongated village green, in front of the municipal office. Its location helps explain the chapel as part of a specifically identified village layout, rather than simply as a standalone building. It is a small rural structure dating from the late 18th century. In terms of chronology, the chapel thus comes well after the presumed founding of Hrádek and the neighbouring village. The descriptions also differ: at Hrádek, the ground plan and ditch are key; here, the ensemble, village green and architectural character are the defining features. This comparison helps put two very different aspects of the local cultural heritage into context.
Mill, river and other traces of time
The former watermill “Válcový mlýn Dr. Lad. Šouši,” also known as Soušův mlýn, stands in the southern part of Libomyšl and is not accessible. It is already marked on a 1727 map of the Jewish settlement in Libomyšl. The map entry establishes 1727 as a documented date on which the mill was mentioned, not necessarily its year of construction; the description “former mill” also reflects its historical status. The mill’s name, location and early cartographic reference are therefore important to the history of the area: it is a historical landmark, not a visitor attraction that can be entered. The Litavka flows through Libomyšl, adding a landscape dimension to the area’s architectural and settlement history. The Hrádecká lípa, meanwhile, was first placed under protection on 26 May 1978. This date relates to the tree’s protection history, whereas 1727 refers to a map entry and the 14th century to a presumed date of foundation.
