City history and volcanic traces

The Puerta de Toledo preserves a tangible piece of Ciudad Real’s history: built in 1328, this Gothic-Mudéjar gate is a remnant of the former city walls. The Georruta de Ciudad Real offers a different perspective on the city. This approximately two-kilometre interpretive trail passes through the maars on which Ciudad Real stands. It begins at Plaza del Pilar, goes through Parque Juan Pablo II and ends at Galerías del Torreón, where pyroclastic deposits can be seen.

Those wishing to experience the volcanic landscape by mountain bike can take a 26-kilometre circular route near Alcolea de Calatrava: the Ruta en bicicleta Volcán de la Santa Cruz al Volcán de Peñarroya y El Martinete passes through volcanic areas. The two routes differ considerably in length and mode of travel: the approximately two-kilometre interpretive trail contrasts with a 26-kilometre mountain-bike loop. If you are interested in guided descents on the Georruta, check the latest schedule.

Archaeology and theatre history

Alarcos, too, tells the story of a long history of settlement. This important Iberian oppidum was continuously inhabited from the Bronze Age until the end of the Middle Ages. At the Parque ArqueolĂłgico de Alarcos, visitors can explore a strategically located hill where cultures, legends and decisive battles converge. The site thus links archaeological history with a landscape whose importance spans many eras.

The Museo-Archivo histórico municipal Elisa Cendrero is housed in a building dating from around 1917. Its collections include historic furniture, paintings and ethnographic objects, as well as fans from the 17th to 19th centuries and 17th-century ceramics. In Almagro (Ciudad Real), the Museo Nacional de Teatro is devoted exclusively to the history of theatre and is Spain’s only museum with this focus. Its collections cover the history of Spanish theatre from Greek and Roman theatre to the avant-garde movements of the 20th century, and include more than 10,000 works on paper. Check the latest visitor information before your visit.

Wetlands and Mediterranean habitats

The Parque Nacional Las Tablas de Daimiel is in the province of Ciudad Real and is one of the last remaining examples of the wetlands of La Mancha Húmeda. Accessible paths and signposted trails lead through the park, and the visitor centre provides information about its history, biodiversity and conservation. The trails and the centre appeal to different interests: nature lovers can explore the paths, while the centre provides background on the park’s values.

The Parque Nacional de Cabañeros is in the Montes de Toledo, in the northwest of the province of Ciudad Real and the southwest of the province of Toledo. Its habitats include Mediterranean forests and scrubland, riparian forests, peat bogs and grassland. Visitor centres, museums and information points present the park’s natural and cultural values in exhibitions; admission to all these facilities is free. Guided off-road vehicle routes cover a vast area and include a short walk and several observation stops. Check the latest access information and tour arrangements before travelling.

More discoveries and practical information

Buses run from Ciudad Real to Alcoba, Horcajo de los Montes, Pueblonuevo del Bullaque, Retuerta del Bullaque and Navas de Estena. If you plan to take one of these services, check the latest timetable and operator before travelling. The Ruta del Vino de la Mancha offers a different thematic trail: it connects landscapes shaped by vineyards, grain fields and Mediterranean uplands with wine traditions and grape-harvest festivals. Its ten participating municipalities include Socuéllamos in the province of Ciudad Real.

For another activity, Parque Alces has an outdoor climbing wall and a zip line. Members of the climbing association can use the climbing wall after contacting the association in advance. Check the latest conditions of use beforehand.
