Once, eleven watermills lined the course of the waterway through Membrilla. Molino del Rezuelo is the only one of these former mills that has survived. It remained in operation until the late 1970s and can be visited today. It was restored by the Escuela Taller de Membrilla. This site brings together a tangible building and the history of watermills.
Mills, Churches and Monastic History
The parish church of Santiago el Mayor also tells the story of several building phases. The present-day church was built in the 15th century, replacing a church from the first quarter of the 13th century. Its architecture is Late Flamboyant Gothic, with some Isabelline features. At the same time, it is exceptionally well preserved today. Anyone interested in architectural history will find both an earlier historic building and a defining 15th-century design here.
The Concepcionistas Franciscanas convent and church offer a different architectural picture. The complex occupies a large plot on Calle de las Monjas. The convent has a square floor plan and three storeys; exposed brick and rubble-stone masonry define its appearance. Two important dates are part of the nuns’ history: Francisco Camacho Martín proposed founding a convent for women in 1609, and the nuns’ move was approved in 1610. At the same site, visitors can therefore explore present-day architectural features and historic milestones in monastic life without conflating them as belonging to the same building phase.
The Ermita de Nuestra Señora la Virgen del Espino brings together further layers of local history. It was built on a motilla and was part of Castillo de El Tocón for centuries. Over time, changes and repeated restoration work erased the traces of the fortress from its former defensive area, which became a sanctuary. The Torre del Reloj is another notable place to visit: visitors can enjoy the view from there.
Landscapes and Routes Around Membrilla
For a stay with a stronger focus on nature, the Paraje Natural de El Peral offers a different experience from the buildings in town. This natural area preserves remains of Roman thermal baths and includes a wooded area suited to relaxing and walking. Nature and archaeological traces thus come together at a specific site.
The Ruta del Quijote crosses the municipal area of Membrilla for 14 kilometres. It passes through rural landscapes and vineyard paths, as well as traditional architecture. If you plan to include the route in your itinerary, check current trail conditions locally. Another way to appreciate the landscape is the Albardinales de Membrilla-La Solana micro-reserve. It lies between the municipal areas of Membrilla and La Solana and can be visited freely. These offer different perspectives: a wooded area for walks, a route through landscapes and vineyard paths, and a protected area between two municipal areas.
Traditions and Regional Cuisine
Local customs also give a visit its own cultural focus. Los Desposorios de Membrilla stem from a tradition whose origins date back to the 13th century. The celebration symbolically marks the betrothal of the Virgin Mary and Saint Joseph. In 2025, Los Desposorios were officially recognised as a festival of provincial tourist interest. The festivities also include a tasting of traditional serrana, a drink made with red wine, sugar and peach.
Another culinary tradition is associated with Jueves de Comadre: gachas blancas are eaten on this Thursday before Carnival Sunday. Membrilla’s traditional dishes also include white beans with partridge, machacón, and chicken or hen in pepitoria. Those planning a trip around regional cuisine will find both a specifically named festival day and several traditional dishes that showcase different aspects of local food culture.
Planning a Trip to Membrilla
You can shape your stay around several distinct interests: the churches, convent and hermitage offer architectural and religious history; Molino del Rezuelo and the Ruta del Quijote bring mills and landscape history to the fore; and El Peral combines a wooded setting with Roman remains. Culinary traditions add local customs and dishes to these themes. This makes it possible to match your search for accommodation in Membrilla to what matters most for your trip, without making every visit follow the same itinerary.
