Argamasilla de Alba brings together literary and cultural history, trails along the Guadiana and the Castillo de Peñarroya. The Casa de Medrano, sites with their own cultural history and a range of routes give you different starting points for planning: you can focus on Cervantes and the Spanish Golden Age, or explore the surrounding area on foot or by bike.

Cervantes and the town’s cultural history

The Casa de Medrano is one of the most important landmarks on the Ruta del Quijote. Its museum is dedicated to Miguel de Cervantes, his work and the historical and literary context of the Spanish Golden Age. The complex also includes a two-storey cave that has been largely preserved in its original state and is traditionally identified as Cervantes’ prison. The museum and cave thus offer different insights into the town’s literary history and traditions.

Other cultural sites have their own character, too. The Pósito de la Tercia is now a cultural and exhibition venue. The Académicos de la Argamasilla held their Cervantine discussion evenings at the Botica de los Académicos. The theatrical performance “Quijote en la calle” pays tribute to Cervantes’ work by staging passages and chapters from Don Quixote; check performance dates before your trip.

The Chapel of the Marquises of Pacheco is part of the cultural visit to the Iglesia de San Juan Bautista. This connection between the church and chapel adds another historical focus to the literary themes. So the Casa de Medrano is not the only place worth visiting: religious and cultural sites also shape the character of Argamasilla de Alba.

Castillo de Peñarroya and trails along the Guadiana

The Castillo de Peñarroya stands on a cliff above the Guadiana, beside the reservoir and dam named after it. Together with the Santuario de Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación de Peñarroya, located within the castle, it forms a historic monument designated a Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC), or Asset of Cultural Interest. Argamasilla de Alba is considered a gateway to the Parque Natural de las Lagunas de Ruidera upstream—a regional connection that extends beyond the town’s individual buildings and trails.

The Motilla del Retamar is also located in the Guadiana riverbed. Fortified settlements of this kind played an important role in managing and controlling economic resources during the Bronze Age. The general significance of such sites helps explain their archaeological context without attributing this function exclusively to the Motilla.

Three routes with different destinations

The waymarked Senda Ecológica, also known as the Senda Interpretativa del Castillo de Peñarroya, runs along the reservoir’s right bank. The round trip is listed as approximately six kilometres. The Sendero del Priorato starts at the bridge over the Guadiana, on the route of the former railway line, now used as the Via Verde, and leads to the Canal del Gran Prior. The GR-114 also starts at the bridge in Argamasilla de Alba, follows the river towards the Castillo de Peñarroya and lists the Motilla del Retamar as its first point of interest.

When choosing between these routes, their respective directions are a useful guide: along the reservoir, to the Canal del Gran Prior, or downstream to the castle, with the Motilla as the first named destination. Check local trail conditions and access to the Senda before setting out.

A cycling route presented in April 2024 passes through the most famous settings in Don Quixote, covers seven stages and a total of 200 kilometres, and starts and finishes in Argamasilla de Alba. It offers a different scale from the walks and hikes mentioned above. For practical planning, consult up-to-date route information.

The night sky and regional cuisine

Argamasilla de Alba holds the Destino Turístico Starlight designation. It recognises the quality of the night sky and its protection from light pollution, adding another way to appreciate the town alongside its cultural and natural attractions. Manchego cheese is also part of the area’s traditional cuisine. So, alongside the historic sites, the night sky and a regional culinary tradition offer different reasons to explore Argamasilla de Alba.
