Terrinches combines a mountainous landscape with scattered, centuries-old olive groves and a range of natural and cultural attractions. Geological outcrops, archaeological sites and historic religious buildings each offer their own points of interest. When planning, it is worth organising the places according to your interests: several visits require specific booking or enquiry arrangements, which you should plan for before your trip.

Geology and Landscape

The Hoz de Terrinches geological site begins about 2.5 km south of Terrinches and is reached from the town via the Camino a Siles. Along the Hoz de Terrinches and its tributary, the Arroyo del Sumidero, outcrops of Palaeozoic formations are generally very clearly visible. The Ordovician, Silurian and Lower Devonian strata can be observed in detail. The distance is approximate; access conditions may change. Check them before visiting.

Discover Nature and Enjoy the Outdoors

Terrileza is an educational and sensory space where you can discover Terrinches’ natural wealth, starting from the Hoz de San Isidro. The Hoz de San Isidro is one of the municipality’s most impressive landscapes. Terrileza includes information panels, a projection room and educational activities, as well as panoramic views and an odorama that conveys the characteristic scents of the local flora. A visit must be booked in advance by calling 926 38 73 60. As this arrangement may change, confirm it before your trip.

The PR-CR 16 reaches the Hoz de San Isidro, follows the watercourse to a lagoon and then climbs to the viewpoint by the Ermita de San Isidro. This offers two different ways to experience nature: Terrileza provides information through panels, projections and the scents of the local flora; the PR-CR 16 is described as a series of scenic points.

Architecture and Heritage in Terrinches

The Iglesia Parroquial de Santo Domingo has a Baroque wooden altarpiece dating from the 17th century. The Ermita de Ntra Sra. de Luciana consists of a chapel and a bullring and was designated a Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC) in June 2002. Its interior has a single nave; the main chapel is covered by a ribbed vault. It also features an 18th-century Marian camarín.

At Castillo Aben Yucef, you can see a square tower built of red sandstone and the surviving remains of a wall around it. Visits are possible by prior arrangement with the Ayuntamiento. Confirm the appointment locally before you arrive.

Archaeological Traces of the Past

La Ontavia is a Roman archaeological site and has been designated a Bien de Interés Patrimonial (BIP) since July 2017. It can currently be visited on request. Castillejo del Bonete is also currently accessible on request. It is a solar sanctuary made up of several tumulus tombs connected by corridors; some of these corridors are astronomically aligned with the winter solstice. The site was used during the Chalcolithic and Bronze Age and was designated a Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC) in 2014. The two sites represent different historical contexts: La Ontavia is Roman, while Castillejo del Bonete was used during two earlier prehistoric periods. As visiting arrangements may change, confirm in advance whether a visit is possible.

Pilgrimage Festival and Local Cuisine

The Romería de San Isidro takes place every year on 15 May at the Paraje de San Isidro and is designated a Fiesta de Interés Turístico Regional. The celebration includes religious activities, traditional games, outdoor meals and family gatherings; programme details may vary. If you are planning your trip around the event, confirm the date and programme in advance.

Traditional Terrinches cuisine includes dishes based on olive oil, lamb, bread and game meat. Caldereta de cordero and Galianos are among the hearty dishes, while Suspiros are a traditional sweet.
