Llanos del Caudillo can be discovered through two distinctive aspects: the irrigation landscape and its paths, and the history of a colonisation village. There is also a church with remarkable works of art and festivals that celebrate local traditions. When planning your trip, it is worth first deciding whether you would rather focus on walks, culture or festival days. This will make it easier to find out which aspects of the town suit your stay.
Paths along the irrigation channels
The Paseo de las Acequias is a nature trail that follows the irrigation channels. Its network of paths connects the town centre with the cultivated fields and passes by wells, water basins and distribution points. Dense vegetation and poplars line the channels; mulberry trees and other trees shape the lush green surroundings. They create a microclimate and provide a refuge for various animals. As you walk along the Paseo, you can also see traditional structures associated with the use of groundwater.
The trail was created in the 1950s during the colonisation of the irrigated area of La Mancha. It is therefore not only a way to experience the landscape on foot, but also a window into its history. The agricultural tracks around Llanos del Caudillo are suitable for walking and cycling, with views over fields of grain and Piel de Sapo melons. Conditions on the tracks may vary. You can reach the Paseo via the A-4 at kilometre 160 or by the CR-P-1513 road; check local road information before setting off.
The history of colonisation and the QuinterĂa caves
Llanos del Caudillo is one of nine colonisation villages founded by the Instituto Nacional de ColonizaciĂłn in the province of Ciudad Real. Traces of this history can also be found in the municipality: underground QuinterĂa caves of the “bajo rasante” type have been preserved at the forest nursery site north of the town. They are classified as a Bien de InterĂ©s Cultural, a cultural asset of special cultural interest.
The caves recreate traditional farm dwellings beneath the ground. Two have been preserved; their traditional layout includes an entrance through a Cañada, a kitchen at the back with a smoke vent, a stable on the side and, in some cases, small adjoining rooms. Farm workers and smallholders traditionally dug out such caves on public holidays or during periods of bad weather. If you are planning to visit, check the access conditions in advance.
Church, art and townscape
The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de los Llanos is the most representative building in the town centre and is open in the morning. Opening hours may change, so check them before your visit. Inside, the church houses an altarpiece with Marian images by Suárez. Stained-glass windows designed by Valdivieso depict the Ave Maria in Latin. The architecture also tells the story of the town: its simple, functional aesthetic reflects the design of the colonisation villages.
The church offers a different focus for your visit from the Paseo: here, religious art and architecture take centre stage, while the Paseo highlights the irrigation landscape and how it is used. Parque el Lago adds to these impressions with a landscaped park, an artificial lake, walking areas and picnic spots. This lets you choose between paths through the cultural landscape and a park with designated walking and picnic areas.
Festivals and local traditions
The patron saint festivities include a Comida Popular prepared by residents, which visitors from outside the town can also attend. The menu features pork with tomatoes and a veal stew. Vaquillas are also held at the Auditorio de usos mĂşltiples during the patron saint festivities. The celebrations in honour of Our Lady of Los Llanos run from 7 to 11 September; the feast day is 8 September. The programme includes religious and cultural events as well as music. Details of the annual programme may vary.
Another date linked to agriculture is San Isidro Labrador on 15 May. The day is celebrated with popular activities and a festive atmosphere connected with agricultural traditions; here too, the annual programme may vary. If you would like to plan your stay around a festival, check the dates and programme in advance. The festivals, church and paths show different sides of Llanos del Caudillo, so you need not limit your visit to a single attraction.
