Two hiking routes offer different timeframes for planning a visit to Villarrubia De Los Ojos: the first section of the Camino Natural del Guadiana is 19.6 kilometres long and takes an average of about four hours. The Sendilla de la Virgen is listed as nine kilometres long and takes approximately two hours. The stated difficulty levels also differ: the Camino section is rated easy, while the Sendilla is rated easy to moderate.
Routes and Landscape
The first section of the Camino Natural del Guadiana runs from Villarta de San Juan to the Pozas de los Alpargateros in Villarrubia De Los Ojos. It is suitable for hiking or cycling. The Sendilla de la Virgen is also a route for hiking or cycling; it runs along the southern foothills of the Sierra de Villarrubia. Check local conditions before setting out.
Along the Sendilla, the landscape is shaped by elevations known as morras, which are associated with Bronze Age settlements. The medieval settlement of Xetar and the historic Camino de los volanderos or veladores can also be seen from the route. This tour thus connects the landscape with traces of different historical periods, without requiring a long list of sights to visit.
Parque Recreativo Gigüela offers another perspective on the surroundings: this recreational area of more than 140,000 square metres lies on the riverbank, one kilometre from the town centre. It can be reached on foot, by bicycle or by car. Paths and trails run along the river, and there are picnic areas and small footbridges across the Gigüela. The park forms part of the Gigüela ecological corridor, which is connected to valuable wetlands around Tablas de Daimiel and the Lagunas y Albardinales del Gigüela Nature Reserve.
The Las Charcas observatory is 2.5 kilometres from the town centre and comprises two facilities for observing birds and the landscape. Within the municipality, some of the wetlands are included in the Parque Nacional de Las Tablas de Daimiel; a large part of the Sierras of Villarrubia De Los Ojos is protected within the Red Natura 2000 network. The Guadiana rises in the area at the Ojos del Guadiana, a natural outlet of Aquifer 23. Water conditions may vary.
For regional context: Villarrubia De Los Ojos lies between the Cabañeros and Las Tablas de Daimiel national parks. The landscape combines mountainous terrain with extensive plains. Las Tablas de Daimiel is a complex ecosystem, comprising a plain formed by flooding from the Guadiana and Gigüela where they converge, as well as an area where groundwater from a large aquifer is discharged.
Architectural History and Local Traditions
Different architectural histories stand side by side in the townscape. The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción was built in the 16th century on the site of the former castle. Its Late Gothic design includes a single-nave layout, a polygonal apse, a ribbed vault and stone buttresses. The Torre del Reloj was built in 1891: architect Sebastián Rebollar constructed the Neo-Mudéjar brick tower to house the town clock.
The Museo Etnográfico San Isidro is housed in a restored former municipal slaughterhouse dating from 1904. Its exhibition presents local economic activities and the tools used for them in a historical sequence spanning from prehistory to the mid-20th century. Visitors interested in the development of local work and its tools will find a thematic perspective here that differs from the architecture of the church and clock tower.
The Santuario Virgen de la Sierra also has a distinctive architectural form: a white, single-nave chapel is incorporated into an elongated, two-storey courtyard complex with living quarters. The sanctuary is generally open daily during daylight hours; the chapel's small religious museum can be visited on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. Check opening arrangements before travelling.
The Romería de la Virgen de la Sierra has been a traditional local celebration in honour of the patron saint since the late 1960s. Two romerías also take place around the Santuario, combining religious ceremonies with popular festivities: one on the third Sunday in May and one on Easter Monday. Exact dates depend on the liturgical calendar. Villarrubia De Los Ojos's Semana Santa is recognised as a festival of regional tourist interest; local brotherhoods continue their processional tradition each year. Dates and programmes vary.
