The Parque Minero preserves the heritage of the world’s oldest mercury mines, which were continuously exploited from antiquity until the beginning of the 21st century. This long mining heritage is also reflected in the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Heritage of Mercury: Almadén and Idrija”: its sites in Almadén include Retamar Castle, religious buildings, and traditional shafts associated with the history of mining. In Almadén, you can therefore encounter technical, social, and architectural traces of the same historical theme.

Underground and the development of mining

The underground mine tour at the Parque Minero begins with a ride in a real mine cage down the San Teodoro shaft. It takes you to the first level, 50 meters below ground. The descent is therefore part of the underground visit. As tour arrangements may change, check the conditions before your visit.

The Centro de Interpretación de la Minería uses detailed audiovisual systems to show how mining methods changed in different eras. The “Palabra de minero” presentation center focuses on another aspect: the anthropology and ethnography of life in mining communities. The two topics complement each other without telling the same story: one focuses on methods, the other on the lives of people in mining.

Museums between the deposit and local life

The Museo del Mercurio features audiovisual presentations, models, and interactive experiments. Its topics range from the geology and paleontology of the deposit to the history of metallurgy, the role of mercury in science, and its transport to the Americas. The museum thus brings together different aspects of mercury: the location of its deposit, its processing, and its uses.

The Museo Hospital de Mineros de San Rafael focuses on local life. Its first floor explores life in Almadén, along with customs, society, culture, and traditions. If you would like to explore the town and its way of life as well as the history of mining and metallurgy, this part of the museum offers a distinct perspective.

Architecture and traces of mining

The Plaza de Toros de Almadén combines two functions in one building: between 1752 and 1765, it was designed as both a bullring and a residential complex to finance the Hospital de Mineros de San Rafael. Its floor plan is hexagonal, and it is surrounded by 24 two-story homes. The combination of the arena and living spaces shapes not only its history but also the building’s distinctive layout.

Other historic buildings include the Hornos de Aludeles, or Bustamante furnaces, dating from 1720. They can be visited in Almadén’s historic mining and metallurgical complex. The Puerta de Carlos IV was built in 1795, during the reign of Carlos IV, as a monumental entrance to the area known as the Cerco de Buitrones. Its date and function make it another architectural testament to the history of mining.

Viewpoints and planning your visit

Retamar Castle offers a natural viewpoint overlooking Almadén and the mining complex. The Antiguo Castillo, also known as the Castillo, preserves evidence of a fortress built in the 12th century during Arab rule to protect the mines’ mineral wealth. It was called “Hins-al-madin,” or “Fuerte de la Mina.” The Castillo can be visited by appointment through the Oficina de Turismo.

The Plaza de Toros de Almadén is accessible and can be visited year-round; check the visiting conditions before your trip. For travel, AISA runs once daily from Ciudad Real to Almadén. As details about the operator and service frequency may change, it is advisable to check the timetable before setting off. This lets you plan visits and travel according to the relevant conditions without reducing the different attractions to a single theme.
