At Morrón de Villamayor, volcanic formations shape the landscape; in the volcanic lagoon complex, wetlands alternate with hill ranges. At the same time, remains of Roman roads, historic bridges and local festivals tell the story of the area’s cultural heritage. On your trip, you can combine wildlife observation, trails through the hills and a glimpse of Villamayor’s traditions.
Volcanic Hills, Wetlands and Trails
The summit of MorrĂłn de Villamayor, known as el MorrĂłn, reaches 773 m and rises about 30 m above the surrounding terrain. Its rounded shape, steep walls and lava-flow front are clearly visible. This well-preserved volcano illustrates the original volcanoes of Campo de Calatrava. Trekking in the northern Sierras takes you through Mediterranean vegetation; from the summits, views extend across the plains towards Argamasilla and AlmodĂłvar.
During periods of heavy rainfall, the volcanic lagoon complex includes around ten wetlands. Their water levels change after rain, while birdwatching is possible year-round. Flamingo colonies are often visible in the shallow wetlands. Other species found there include waders, ducks and geese, herons, harriers, the Spanish imperial eagle, the cinereous vulture, falcons and owls. Which birds you see depends on the season and the weather.
The Cañadas, Cordeles, Veredas and trails that pass through Villamayor are also suitable for walking and cycling, offering a way to discover the landscape, flora and fauna. One specific route linking a volcanic hill with another destination is the Geopark route El Minero: it leads from Morrón to the viewpoint at the monument to the miner in Puertollano and has no significant change in elevation. Check trail conditions before setting out.
Roman Traces and Local Buildings
A paved Roman road ran through Villamayor, connecting Toledo and CĂłrdoba and leading from Puerto de Caracuel to Puerto de la Viñuela. Remains of the road have been preserved. Two historic bridges stand over the RĂo Tirteafuera: the 15th-century bridge has three arches with semicircular brick archways; a nearby 16th-century bridge has ten arches. Their different designs offer a tangible way to appreciate the local architecture.
The Lavadero de El Villarejo is a polygonal structure built around a well, preserving the village’s former washing place. Archaeological finds also tell of settlement before Villamayor was founded: a Bronze Age burial site and three from the Visigothic period. Their remains are held at the Provincial Museum of Ciudad Real. The Casa de los Caballeros de Calatrava, once the residence of commanders, now houses a local museum. It preserves documents, tools and historical objects relating to rural and mining life.
Festivals and RomerĂas
A regular fixture in the local calendar is the Fiestas de Mayo and the RomerĂa in honour of the Virgen del Rosario, celebrated every year from 30 April to 2 May. In recognition of its artistic and cultural value, the tradition was declared a regional tourist attraction on 20 December 2013. The Canto de los Mayos is performed on the night of 30 April into 1 May and has been documented in Villamayor since at least the 18th century. The annual programme may vary; check the details for the relevant year when planning your visit.
The RomerĂa de San Isidro takes place on 15 May in the El Villarejo area, about 3 km from the village. The saint is carried to the chapel, followed by a mass and communal meals. During a RomerĂa in May, participants also take a break at Finca La Cruz to sample traditional migas from La Mancha. This culinary stop is therefore part of the traditional festivities, alongside the processions.
Another RomerĂa travels from Villamayor to Tirteafuera. The Virgen del Rosario is carried on foot, and a traditional meeting between the Virgen and San JosĂ© takes place at the RĂo Tirteafuera. The route and proceedings may differ from year to year. Together with the celebrations held on set dates, this tradition offers another way to experience the local culture.
