Almedina’s historic heritage takes many different forms: a parish church that was once used as a mosque, ceramic reproductions of artworks, and a bridge with roadways from different periods. Fountains, viewpoints and a hiking trail add practical options for enjoying the landscape and getting around to these cultural sites.

Churches, art and historic heritage

The Iglesia de Santa María is a 14th-century parish church. Its style is described as Late Gothic or Elizabethan; the building was previously a Muslim mosque. The Ermita de los Remedios offers a different architectural accent: this 18th-century building is Neoclassical. Inside, the small dome features popular-style paintings from 1725. The hermitage is open in the mornings; as opening hours may change, check them locally before your visit.

Almedina’s Museo al Aire Libre comprises 26 ceramic reproductions of works by Renaissance painter Fernando Yáñez de Almedina. An urban scavenger hunt takes children and young people past 22 of the museum’s works displayed in public streets. Check in advance whether participation is currently available.

Two roadways from different periods can be seen on the Puente Romano. The bridge was excavated archaeologically and restored in 2015. The older of the two roadways was, in all probability, the Roman Via 29, which connected Mariana at Puebla del Príncipe on the Vía Augusta with Consabura near Consuegra. The Puente Romano can be visited. The stone portal next to the Ayuntamiento belongs to the house where Fray Juan Muñoz de la Cueva was born and lived; however, only the façade of the Casa de Fray Muñoz de la Cueva can be viewed. Check access information for both places again before your trip.

The Casino de Labradores also has a long history: it was formerly called Círculo la Amistad, and its history goes back more than a hundred years. At the Horno apícola municipal, efforts were made to integrate the building more closely into the landscape using traditional architectural materials. The Ayuntamiento de Almedina offers guided tours explaining the condition and operation of the Horno. Check tour availability before your visit.

Paths, water and local cuisine

The Ruta de los Pizorros is a 12.45-kilometre hiking trail rated as easy. As the route length and difficulty rating are subject to official updates, check the route details before setting out. The Paseo de las Cruces offers another way to connect paths and places: it leads to the Dehesilla gardens and the Ermita de San Isidro y San Cristóbal. The Paseo Marítimo offers views of Almedina’s historic old town.

At the water tank on the Calar de Cruces, a viewpoint looks north over Dehesilla’s traditional irrigation fields. The viewpoint is located at this specific spot. In the town centre is the Fuente del Cañaveral. Its salty water was probably used mainly to irrigate vegetable gardens.

The fountains also differ in design. The Fuente de Almedina consists of three basins fed by four water spouts from two springs. The Fuente pública del emperador Carlos V, also called the Fuente del Emperador, has an imperial coat of arms, three cast-iron spouts and stone basins. These two fountains offer concrete details for seeing how waterworks and design differ from one another.

Almedina’s traditional cuisine includes gachas, migas and galianos, also known as gazpacho manchego, as well as dishes made with red-legged partridge. The Baile de Ánimas is another local tradition: its origins date back to the 14th century, and it takes place every year on 28 December. If this date matters for your travel plans, check the event details in advance.
