Pedro Muñoz combines a protected lagoon landscape with remarkable traces of local history, industry and literature. This offers a range of options for planning your visit: explore wetland birds and trails, discover historic buildings, or plan your trip around the Mayo traditions.
Lagoons and Birdlife
The Complejo Lagunar de Pedro Muñoz is designated as a Biosphere Reserve and a Special Protection Area for Birds. Its ecological features include unique plant communities in saline habitats and one of the best waterbird communities in La Mancha Húmeda. There are observation posts in the area for studying and watching birds. The Centro de Interpretación El Humedal de Don Quijote complements the nature theme with interactive panels and videos. Guided visits are also offered there, with the opportunity to observe wild birds.
Trails with Different Routes
The Ruta de la Malvasía follows the shore of Laguna del Pueblo for approximately three kilometres. The Senda de la Laguna del Pueblo takes a different form: it is a circular route starting and ending at the Centro de Interpretación, with viewpoints for observing wetland birds. Check trail conditions and signage locally. As a guide to several lagoons, the CM-3103 starts in Pedro Muñoz and connects some of them.
In the San Miguel area, a trail runs along the Záncara River and is suitable for walkers and cyclists. Alongside the trails for observing the lagoons, there is also a route for walking and cycling. The routes mainly differ in their course: one follows the shore of Laguna del Pueblo, another is a circular trail to viewpoints, and a third runs along the Záncara through the San Miguel area.
Buildings and Local History
The Iglesia parroquial de San Pedro Apóstol stands in Plaza de España, in the historic town centre. Built between 1699 and 1718, it dates from the late Renaissance; its tower was added in 1721. The Ermita de la Virgen del Buen Parto, also known as the Ermita de San Miguel, was built between 1690 and 1695. Casa de la Paca offers a different impression: this manor house has a large stone doorway and a large coat of arms.
The Quixote Box houses the Zunzunegui Cervantine collection, with 845 items, including books and various objects relating to Don Quixote and Miguel de Cervantes. The collection includes editions in more than 30 languages. The Antigua Fábrica de Harinas also preserves an extensive piece of industrial history: its complete, very well-preserved factory machinery includes machines dating from 1860. A visit can be arranged in advance through the tourist office.
Other historic connections reach back to different periods. The archaeological site Yacimiento arqueológico del Cerro de las Nieves preserves remains of Pedro Muñoz’s earliest inhabitants from the late prehistoric period, particularly the Late Bronze Age and Iron Age. The Puente de San Miguel dates from the 14th century and is associated with the historic transhumance route. At Casa de la Paca, meanwhile, the doorway and coat of arms draw attention to the architectural style of a manor house.
Around the Mayo Traditions
The Ronda del Mayo Manchego was recognised as an intangible Bien de Interés Cultural on 9 April 2024. During the Ronda, participants make their way through the streets on the night of 30 April to 1 May, singing the traditional “Mayo” to young women in the town. Los Mayos begins in the early afternoon on 1 May with a procession from Plaza de España to Plaza de Toros, involving more than 500 people. The Fiesta del Mayo Manchego also includes a food presentation where typical products from Pedro Muñoz are offered for tasting. As the annual programme may change, check the dates and programme in advance if you are planning your trip around the event.
Winery Visits and Tastings
The wineries also offer different experiences. Bodega San Isidro de Pedro Muñoz S.CCLM offers guided tours. Bodegas Viña Obdulia offers tours and wine-tasting courses for interested visitors. Bodegas Bernal García Chicote includes the barrel room, laboratory and ageing room in its winery tours. Bodegas Mº Luisa Rodríguez Huertas offers wine tastings on its premises. Visitor arrangements may require advance confirmation, so check your visit plans before travelling.
