The square bullring in Castellar De Santiago was built in 1645 and is one of the oldest in Spain. Together with the Centro de InterpretaciĂłn Pablo de Olavide, it forms a unique cultural heritage ensemble in the comarca.
Cultural Heritage and Architectural History
Another trace of the town’s history is the parish church of Santa Ana. It was built in the mid-16th century on uneven ground. To level the building’s structure, an artificial stone mound was created. Three coat-of-arms houses bear identical heraldic motifs and may have belonged to the town’s last Hidalgo families.
Festivals and Art in the Town
During the Fiestas del Cristo de la Misericordia, bonfires are lit in the town’s streets every year at 9 p.m. on September 13. They open the festivities; individual program details may vary. If you are travelling for this opening event, check the program for the year. Parque Francisco Castilla features sculptures inspired by the local flora and fauna.
Routes and Landscape
An extensive network of livestock trails can be used for hiking and cycling. Rural roads connect Castellar De Santiago with the Valle de Alcudia y Sierra Madrona Natural Park, known for its biodiversity and Mediterranean landscapes. The GR 164, the Cañada Real Conquense, also known as the Cañada de los Serranos, passes through the town.
La Herrumbrosa, also known as Rumbrosa, lies in the south of the municipal area. It is a natural area at the foot of the Sierra Morena. During the pilgrimage to San Marcos, it serves as a local recreation area. You can visit the area free of charge and without set opening hours; check local access conditions before travelling there. Cueva del Moreno is also within the municipal area, in a transitional landscape between Campo de Montiel and the foothills of the Sierra Morena.
Activities and Visit Planning
Visitor activities include horse-riding routes and astrotourism. The iron mine on the slopes of Cerro el CastellĂłn is another distinctive local feature; it dates back to Celtiberian times. Visitors can enter the mine for a few metres. In summer, when conditions are dry, it is possible to go further inside, while in winter access is severely restricted due to the risk of flooding. Check local conditions if you are planning a visit.
When looking for a holiday apartment, the reason for your trip can help guide your choice: the bonfires marking the start of the Fiestas have a fixed annual date, September 13. For a visit to the iron mine, however, dry conditions and the time of year determine how far you can go inside. This means that festival planning and a mine visit involve different practical questions to check in advance.
