Santa Cruz de Mudela combines historic religious buildings and living traditions with hiking routes and a protected landscape. A stay can therefore be shaped around different interests: from architecture and feast days to trails through the surrounding area and archaeological traces at Noria Olaya.
Religious Buildings and the Las Virtudes Ensemble
The Ermita Santa María la Mayor was the first church built in Santa Cruz de Mudela and served as the original parish church. The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción has a different building history: built in the 16th century, it combines late Gothic forms with Renaissance elements. In 1993, it was recognised as a Bien de Interés Cultural. It is open to visitors; access is subject to local regulations.
Another destination is the Paraje y Santuario de Las Virtudes, six to seven kilometres southeast of Santa Cruz de Mudela. The Santuario lies in a small valley surrounded by woodland, watered by the Arroyo de la Virgen. The ensemble includes the square Plaza de Toros de Las Virtudes. It was built between 1641 and 1645 and is considered one of Spain’s oldest bullrings still in operation. The Ermita de Las Virtudes preserves a 15th-century Mudéjar roof structure; the ensemble also includes the Camarín de la Virgen, created in 1699, with paintings attributed to Antonio Palomino.
It is helpful to distinguish between the visits: Individual visits to the Plaza de Toros and the Santuario are free of charge. Guided visits also include the Camarín. Visitor services and guided tours are available; check the current local visiting regulations in advance.
Trails, Routes and Traces of the Past
The PR-CR 83 Sendero de la Noria Olaya is an open circular trail measuring 10.87 kilometres and rated as moderate difficulty. Check trail conditions before setting out. A hiking route also runs through the area around Noria Olaya, where remains of Bronze Age structures can be found.
The Ruta de Don Quijote – Etapa 3 is on a different scale: it covers 47 kilometres and passes through Santa Cruz de Mudela, Viso del Marqués and Almuradiel. The route can be travelled on foot, on horseback or by bicycle. Its length and travel options offer a clear comparison with the shorter Noria Olaya route, which is designated as a circular trail; trail conditions should also be checked in advance here.
There are also archaeological remains of a qanat at Noria Olaya. The system consists of underground galleries for collecting water; its origins may be Roman or Arab. This cautious dating reflects the evidence: the remains invite visitors to consider how water was used in the landscape, without claiming a definitive origin.
Festivals, Crafts and Nature
The festival calendar offers another way to experience the town. The Romería de Nuestra Señora María de las Virtudes takes place on 8 September. A mass at dawn is followed by a procession to the Santuario de las Virtudes. For the Corpus Christi celebrations, several streets are decorated with awnings and carpets made of sawdust and salt; many residents also set up altars. Holy Week includes processions organised by four brotherhoods of the Passion. As events can change from year to year, it is worth checking that year’s programme.
Crafts and regional context are also part of the picture in Santa Cruz de Mudela: the knives it is known for continue to be made by hand. The town is also one of five municipalities on the Ruta del Vino de Valdepeñas. The others are Valdepeñas, Moral de Calatrava, Torrenueva and San Carlos del Valle.
Those who want to include nature in their stay can take the protected landscape into account: the municipality is part of the ZEPA Áreas Esteparias del Campo de Montiel and is considered important for the Spanish imperial eagle, the cinereous vulture, the black stork and the Iberian lynx. Species information should be checked against current conservation guidance. For travel by rail, access to the platforms at Santa Cruz de Mudela station is assured; check current station services before travelling.
