La Solana offers a variety of ways to experience culture and the landscape: Zarzuela, historic architecture, regional cuisine and nature within the municipality. Plaza Mayor forms the historic center and is recognized as a Bien de Interés Cultural. It is open to the public and can be visited. When planning your stay, you might consider whether you want to focus mainly on the city’s cultural attractions or also include nature and regional traditions.
Zarzuela at the museum and in the events calendar
La Semana Nacional de la Zarzuela takes place annually in La Solana and has been held since 1984. It is recognized as a Fiesta de InterĂ©s TurĂstico Nacional. As dates are set separately for each edition, it is advisable to check the relevant program announcement before planning your visit.
The Museo La Rosa del Azafrán also focuses on the history and culture of La Solana, relating its exhibits to the urban fabric. Its six thematic areas are based on the structure of the Zarzuela La Rosa del Azafrán. The exhibition includes interactive audio content by the work’s author, models of Zarzuela stage sets and an interactive piano interface on which visitors can play various pieces. As exhibits may be adapted during future renovations, it is worth checking what is currently on display in advance.
Architectural history in different forms
The Iglesia de San Juan Bautista is a Baroque building with Neoclassical tendencies and vaulted side chapels. It is the surviving part of a former Trinitarian convent, construction of which began in 1624; the church was reconstructed in 1970. The Ermita de San Sebastián offers a different architectural impression: it is considered La Solana’s oldest religious temple. Its construction is dated to the 14th–15th centuries, though no more precise date is known. Its early Gothic structure is complemented by a Mudejar roof with polychrome inlay and mother-of-pearl decoration.
More details can be found in various buildings and spaces. The Sala Noble, also known as the Sala de Juntas, has a Mudejar wooden ceiling built using the Par y Nudillo construction method and richly decorated with geometric patterns. The Casa de la Encomienda was the seat of the Encomienda of La Solana and retains an original tower of the Order of Santiago and a columned courtyard. The Palacio Don Diego was restored between 1990 and 1993 and converted into a cultural center with an exhibition space, auditorium and classrooms. At OrĂgenes de Santa Catalina, remains of the structure there can be seen through glass panels.
Religious tradition and local cuisine
The Ermita del Humilladero is the seat of the CofradĂa de la Virgen de Peñarroya, the patron saint of La Solana. The Virgen visits the Ermita twice a year: arriving on the second Saturday in September and departing on the Sunday after the feast day of Saint Anthony. These two fixed points in the calendar give the tradition a clear seasonal structure.
Local cuisine includes Gachas, Pisto, Migas, Asadillo, Caldereta de cordero, Moje vendimiador and Potaje de Pascua. Viejas is also considered a traditional dish and is a special sweet treat. The Dominican nuns also prepare traditional sweets called Suspiros for special occasions or to order.
Nature and themed routes
The Microrreserva de los Albardinales de Membrilla-La Solana lies between the municipalities of Membrilla and La Solana and is open to visitors. Check the visiting conditions before your visit. The municipality of La Solana is an important area for protected animal species, including the Spanish imperial eagle, cinereous vulture, black stork and Iberian lynx.
The Rutas TurĂsticas por La Solana comprise a variety of routes where visitors can discover the city’s historic, gastronomic and artisanal heritage. La Solana is also located on the seventh section of the Ruta de Don Quijote.
