Embalse de Gasset is the most important natural area in Fernán Caballero. Here, a striking landscape, designated wildlife protection and kayaking trips come together. Beyond the reservoir, individual places and routes also give your stay different focuses: you can combine nature-related activities with hikes or focus on festivals and buildings.

Reservoir, wildlife and trails

Kayaking trips take place at Embalse de Gasset, including year-round excursions organised by local companies. Whether an excursion is available depends on local providers and current conditions. The reservoir is designated as a wildlife protection area. This describes its protected status, but does not guarantee that you will see specific animals during a visit. One of the few colonies of cormorants on the Iberian Peninsula is located at Sierra del Perro, offering a special connection to the area's birdlife.

If you prefer to explore on foot, you can hike on public trails and livestock routes in Fernán Caballero. Access and trail conditions may vary depending on the season. Another note about the landscape takes you to the Bañuelos: El Congosto is an area by the river, known for its abundant water even in years of drought. The reservoir, cormorant colony and riverside area thus represent different nature-related themes; they are not simply a single excursion destination. Which ones you include in your plans depends on whether you are interested in kayaking, birdlife or hiking.

Festivals at different times of year

The Romería de San Isidro takes place around 15 May. The procession goes from the town to a hermitage on the summit of Embalse de Gasset. Festival activities include communal outdoor meals, a dance event, traditional games and fireworks; individual activities may vary from year to year. Check the current schedule before travelling if you would like to experience the Romería.

The traditional Encierro al estilo fernanduco takes place on 30 August during the San Agustín festivities and has a history of more than 150 years. On 24 August 2012, the “Tradicional encierro al estilo fernanduco” was recognised as a festival of regional tourist interest. The date of this recognition and the annual festival date serve different purposes. The programme for the relevant year is what matters for visitors; confirm the current dates before your trip.

Church and Plaza Mayor

The Iglesia Parroquial Nuestra Señora de Gracia dates from the 16th century. Visits are possible during service times, so plan yours around the current service schedule. The church has a single nave and two buttresses. Its described architectural features also include an attached three-part tower, a bell tower and a modernist clock. Anyone interested in architectural styles will find several specific details here, not just a date.

The Plaza Mayor can also be described by a precise feature: it is triangular. Together with the church, it offers a cultural counterpoint to the natural attractions around the reservoir, river and trails. You can consider these different focuses alongside one another during your stay without combining them into a set route.

Plan your journey

The N-401 provides a road connection to Fernán Caballero. The nearest railway station is in Ciudad Real, 16 km away. If you are travelling by train, check the station and transport connections in advance; if travelling by road, take current travel conditions into account. These details offer different points of reference for getting there, but do not prescribe a route between the station and the town. You can choose accommodation to suit your travel arrangements and preferred interests—nature, hiking, festival dates or architecture.
