Alcoba de los Montes is one of the municipalities of Cabañeros National Park; more than 17,000 hectares of the municipality’s territory lie within the national park. This protected landscape is therefore an important focal point for wildlife watching and routes. Alcoba also offers insights into local history and regional culture, for example at the Ethnographic Museum. Nature and cultural heritage provide different starting points for planning a trip.

Nature and wildlife watching around Alcoba

The Stork Observatory is located in the wider area around Alcoba. This wooden observatory is open to the public and is about three kilometres from the Casa Palillos Visitor Centre. From there, visitors can look out over a colony of white storks; deer, cranes and vultures can also be spotted seasonally. If you hope to see a particular species, bear in mind the seasonal nature of these sightings when planning your trip.

A temporary lake with no outflow is also located nearby. Several species of waterbirds breed there, and in winter it serves as a resting place for cranes. Another observatory at the Casa Palillos Visitor Centre offers a view of the raña; depending on the season, groups of deer and other animals can be seen there. The area’s natural features also include the Mesto de Santa Quiteria: this thousand-year-old hybrid of holm oak and cork oak is described as one of the largest trees in the province.

Routes with different planning details

The Laguna Grande de Alcoba route starts in Alcoba, is 7.5 kilometres long and can be covered on foot or by bicycle. Check the route’s current condition locally. Another route leads from the Ethnographic Museum to the Castillo de los Moros. It is described as moderately difficult and takes about three hours; here too, check access locally before setting out. The details differ: for Laguna Grande, the focus is on distance and ways of getting around, while for the route to the Castillo, it is on duration and difficulty.

The Ruta de las 6 Fuentes starts in the centre of Alcoba and passes through natural landscapes and by natural springs. The Ruta del Camino de la Atalaya connects Alcoba with Santa Quiteria. For these routes too, it is advisable to check the current condition of the paths locally. For a different kind of outing, a guided 4x4 tour starts in Alcoba de los Montes; it is intended for groups of at least six people.

Museum, buildings and local traditions

The Alcoba Ethnographic Museum displays traditional tools from the region, a reconstructed hut used by shepherds and charcoal burners, a model of a charcoal kiln and numerous agricultural implements. It also provides information, maps and brochures about Cabañeros National Park. Check the current opening hours before visiting the museum.

Alcoba is home to the Church of La Consolación, built in the Gothic-Renaissance style. The Parish Church of Nuestra Señora de la Consolación also has a 16th-century altarpiece. The Castillo de los Moros is a prehistoric settlement from the Bronze Age, established about 3,500 years ago. The town’s history thus complements its nature-related attractions with an archaeological site and a specific architectural detail.

Carnival also has its own tradition, shaped by the figures Ahorcado and Maculillo. According to regional accounts, this tradition dates back to the Middle Ages. Nearby, in Santa Quiteria, the festival in honour of San Isidro takes place from 13 to 15 May. The programme includes public festivities, a communal meal and folk performances; check the dates and programme in advance for the year of your trip. During celebrations in honour of Santa Quiteria, locally made Sobaos and Aigas are also blessed and distributed to residents. The Centro Turístico Astronómico Singular y Planetario is housed in the municipality’s former silo.
