Malagón combines Teresian history with hiking trails, a protected lagoon landscape and regional festivals. This offers a range of options for planning your trip: a town walk to places associated with Santa Teresa de Jesús, nature watching and routes in the Sierra de Malagón, or a visit during one of the festival traditions. The routes also vary considerably in length and layout.

Teresian history in Malagón

The “Caminando con Teresa” route is a Teresian town walk to significant places in Malagón associated with Santa Teresa de Jesús. The route is freely accessible throughout the day; check local access information before your visit. The walk gives your stay a clear historical focus without requiring you to plan individual stops as separate excursions.

Santa Teresa de Jesús founded her third convent, the Monasterio de San José, in Malagón on April 11, 1568. Construction of the convent began in 1576, following her instructions. To learn about the saint’s history and legacy, you can visit the Museo Teresiano together with the convent church as part of a guided tour. Check the visiting arrangements in advance. Another historical stop is the Parroquia de Santa María Magdalena, built in the 15th and 16th centuries beside the Camino Real de la Plata.

Hiking and birdwatching

There are hiking trails in the Sierra de Malagón, and general access to the area in the Reserva Natural Navas de Malagón is free. As a protected natural area, the Reserva requires visitors to be considerate: stay on the paths and at the edges, and do not enter sensitive areas. Nava Grande is suitable for birdwatching. Which species can be spotted depends on the season and may vary.

The routes described offer different formats. The PR-CR 23 is 13.5 kilometres long and is one-way. The Sierra de Malagón–Molino Carrillo route covers 9.5 kilometres there and back and is rated moderate. Valdehierro–Peña Negra is an 18-kilometre circular route; Las Navas de Malagón is 16.4 kilometres long and also goes there and back. So when comparing them, consider not only the distance but also the route layout: one route is described as one-way, two go there and back, and one is a circular route. Route details may be updated; check local information about the trails before setting out.

Museums, a mill and festivals

The Centro Cultural Santa Teresa is housed in a distinguished 19th-century mansion. It hosts cultural activities, exhibitions and municipal events; the specific programme may vary. The Museo Gloria Merino was also opened at the Centro Cultural Santa Teresa as a space dedicated to the artist’s legacy. Its collection includes works that Gloria Merino donated to the municipality of Malagón. The opening exhibition featured representative works from different periods of her career, as well as sketches, illustrations, studies, photographs, awards and press articles.

Molino Carrillo combines a history dating back to the 18th century with preserved architectural details, including sturdy stone walls, wooden roofs and a hydraulic mill wheel. This makes the mill a different way to explore local history from the convent and church buildings. The festivals, by contrast, focus on community events: Malagón’s Carnival celebrations have been recognised as Fiestas de Interés Turístico Regional. They include a regional Migas competition, with a tasting of the traditional dish accompanied by sweets and rosquillas. The exact dates and schedule of the Carnival programme may vary.

The Romerías de las Aldeas are also part of the annual calendar: they take place every Sunday in May. If you want to plan your trip around a festival, check the specific programme in advance. When choosing a hotel in Malagón, the purpose of your trip can be a good starting point: Teresian history, hiking and birdwatching, or one of the festival traditions. This helps you tailor your stay to the topics that genuinely interest you, without combining different routes or events into a fixed itinerary.
