Retuerta Del Bullaque can be planned around specific interests: two distinctly different hiking routes, landscapes in Cabañeros National Park, local history, recurring traditions and a wine visit offer a variety of focuses. If you decide in advance between a shorter path, a longer hike or a mix of nature and culture, you can organise your visits to suit your travel plans.

Hiking routes with different profiles

The Senda de la Cañada Real Segoviana is a freely accessible, linear route covering 4.6 kilometres. Its trailheads are at kilometre markers 80 and 81 on the CM-4017; it connects Horcajo de los Montes and Retuerta Del Bullaque. The Ruta de la Viñuela also starts at kilometre markers 80 and 81 on the road. This freely accessible route is 13 kilometres long, of moderate difficulty and semicircular; it also connects Horcajo de los Montes and Retuerta Del Bullaque.

Length and route shape make for a particularly clear comparison: the Senda is the shorter linear route, while the Ruta de la Viñuela is longer and explicitly rated as moderate. Both run between the same towns, but follow different route formats. You can therefore choose a route to suit your planned distance and preferred type of trail.

Cabañeros, wildlife and fossils

Cabañeros National Park is partly within the municipality of Retuerta Del Bullaque. Expansive dehesas, or open woodlands, and rañas, or open plains, along with mountain ranges, shape the landscape and provide a habitat for numerous birds and mammals. If you want to get your bearings in connection with the national park, Casa Palillos is located in the town of Pueblonuevo del Bullaque, also within the municipality. It is a visitor reception centre for the national park.

The Museo de la Fauna de Cabañeros in Retuerta Del Bullaque features interactive exhibition areas dedicated to the region’s and national park’s animal species, as well as the main characteristics of the local ecosystem. Check whether a visit is possible before planning a trip to the museum.

Another connection with nature is geological: fossil-bearing outcrops lie 1.8 kilometres from Retuerta Del Bullaque, on the roadside rock faces along the road to Navas de Estena. Trilobites and other fossils can be found there. Geological traces thus complement the themes of landscape and wildlife.

Local history, views and traditions

The parish church of San Bartolomé Apóstol in Retuerta Del Bullaque dates from the 16th century. Castillo de Prim is a 19th-century historicist mansion: red brick and a romantic character define the building, which is associated with General Prim. It stands on private property and is not open to visitors. You can view it from the surrounding area while respecting private property.

The tower, viewpoint and path at Torre de Abraham are freely accessible year-round. From the car park on the CM-403, you can walk to the tower. Check the latest visitor information before your visit.

Two recurring traditions take place at different times of year. On the night of 12 December, a traditional celebration is held in Plaza del Reloj, featuring a large rosemary bonfire, singing, dancing, chocolate and churros. A Romería, or pilgrimage celebration, takes place on the second Sunday in May and is associated with the source of the Bullaque River. If you want to plan a trip around these occasions, the fixed December date and the Sunday in May are two different planning points.

Wine visit and practical planning

The Dehesa del Carrizal winery in Retuerta Del Bullaque offers a two-hour visit that includes a walk through the vineyards, a tour of the cellar and a tasting of six wines. Local ham, cheese and sausages are served with the wines. The visit must be reserved through the winery.

Retuerta Del Bullaque is served by a bus from Ciudad Real, operated by Bogasbus. As operators and timetables can change, check the connection before travelling. A reservoir in Retuerta Del Bullaque is a fishing spot with several access points. Before going fishing, find out about the applicable fishing rules and access.

The two routes, cultural events and winery visit, which requires a reservation, call for different plans for your stay.
