The Santuario del Santísimo Cristo del Espíritu Santo is located in the hamlet of El Cristo Del Espíritu Santo, which shares its name. The yellow-and-white-marked route to Piedralá starts at the sanctuary. Sacred art, archaeological traces and the landscape along the walking route offer different ways to shape your stay.

Sacred art at the sanctuary

The dome above the presbytery of the Ermita del Santísimo Cristo del Espíritu Santo is decorated with oil paintings of Saint Teresa of Ávila, Mary Magdalene, Saint Pantaleon and Saint Francis of Assisi. The figure of Christ, Cristo del Espíritu Santo, was created by Madrid sculptor Faustino Sanz Herranz in the 1960s; it is incorporated into a Baroque altarpiece in the Santuario.

The sanctuary also houses an Ecce Homo painting from the Toledo school, dating to the 17th century. It is considered the only surviving portrait of the first lords of Malagón. The dome paintings, the figure of Christ and the Ecce Homo offer different ways to explore the sacred art of the area.

Archaeological traces near Cruz del Cristo

A Roman votive altar dedicated to the god Mars has been preserved in the courtyard of the Santuario. The Cruz del Cristo site is of great historical and archaeological importance. In the 1990s, a Visigothic necropolis with stone sarcophagi and grave goods was discovered at Cruz del Cristo. The finds are now housed in the Museo Provincial de Ciudad Real. The La Cruz del Cristo necropolis is considered a rural Visigothic cemetery.

Remains of walls discovered beneath the Templete de la Cruz have been interpreted as a possible 6th-century basilica.

Procession for the patron saint festivities

For the patron saint festivities, the figure of Cristo del Espíritu Santo is carried every year in a procession from the sanctuary to Malagón, then brought back in a well-attended Romería. If you would like to plan your stay around these celebrations, check the specific dates, as the festival dates vary.

Hike or mountain bike to Piedralá

The route to Piedralá, classified as a Sendero de Pequeño Recorrido (short-distance trail), starts at the Santuario; yellow-and-white markers indicate the way. Check the trail markings and route conditions before setting out. The trail follows the Molinos and Carrizo streams through Mediterranean vegetation, cultivated valleys and pastureland. A valley between El Cristo del Espíritu Santo and Piedralá can also be explored on foot or by mountain bike.

After about three kilometres, the route reaches the Embalse del arroyo de los Molinos. At the end of the reservoir, an extensive carpet of ferns grows, turning an intense green in spring—especially after the winter rains and before the summer heat. Piedralá hamlet is around 13.5 kilometres away; the walk takes approximately three and a half hours one way. Treat these figures as estimates when planning your trip.

Griffon vultures and Spanish imperial eagles may be spotted along the route. Sightings are not guaranteed and vary with the season.

Navas de Malagón

The Navas de Malagón lie within the municipality of Malagón and consist of three volcanic lakes that hold water intermittently and are suitable for birdwatching. They are designated as a nature reserve, a Site of Community Importance (SCI) and a Special Protection Area for Birds (SPA). Water levels and access may vary; check current conditions and protected-area rules before visiting.
