The protected windmills on the Sierra de los Molinos and Cerro de la Paz bring the history of technology in Campo De Criptana to life; museums in mills and historic buildings add to the picture. For those who would also like to include a natural area, the Laguna de Salicor offers a different focus. The sights range from mill mechanisms and local history to art, wine, and the way of life in the past.

Windmills and Their History

The windmill ensemble is protected as an Asset of Cultural Interest (Bien de Interés Cultural) and as a historic site. From the Sierra de los Molinos, the view stretches across the La Mancha plain. One of the historic mills, Molino Burleta, preserves its original mechanisms and structure. The Centro de Interpretación del Molino Manchego focuses on different types of windmills, how they work, and their machinery. During a visit, the preserved mill and the explanation of its technology therefore offer two distinct ways to explore the subject.

Traditional milling can be seen at one of the historic windmills on the first Sunday of each month. In July, August, and September, the demonstrations instead take place on the first Saturday evening. Check the specific date before your trip so that your visit coincides with the relevant demonstration.

Museums Between Local History and Art

The Molino Culebro houses the Sara Montiel Museum, with personal belongings and items from her professional career. The Molino Quimera is dedicated to another local subject: its museum recreates Campo De Criptana’s Holy Week processions in miniature. Holy Week is recognized as a festival of regional tourist interest. Meanwhile, the Museo Eloy Teno displays a selection of works by the sculptor, featuring themes inspired by Cervantes.

The PĂłsito Real combines a historic building with its present-day function as a museum. Dating from the 16th century, it served as an agricultural grain bank; today, it is also the town museum and includes a permanent archaeological exhibition. The focus at the Molino Inca Garcilaso is wine: its museum is dedicated to the history of wine, Campo De Criptana wine, and D.O. La Mancha.

The Casa-Cueva de La Pastora Marcela also offers a glimpse into everyday history. The cave dwelling retains its original form and conveys the domestic way of life in the past in the AlbaicĂn Criptano. It is offered as a guided tour lasting around 20 minutes; tickets must be purchased at the Oficina de Turismo.

Demonstrations and Planning Your Day

An organized one-day route through Campo De Criptana covers the town’s main sights and can serve as a guide for your visit. When planning, it also helps to distinguish the museums by subject: mill technology, local archaeological history, art, and wine each offer a different focus. The traditional milling demonstration follows the monthly schedule mentioned above, with the summer exception.

Lagoon, Birds, and Route Options

The Laguna de Salicor is a seasonal, saline endorheic wetland. It was designated a nature reserve in 2000, is part of the La Mancha HĂşmeda wetlands, and is designated a Special Protection Area for birds (ZEPA). Large concentrations of cranes occur there during migration. The area is also home to steppe and wading birds such as little bustards, sandgrouse, stone-curlews, and great bustards. Which birds you can see varies by season.

A round-trip route of about 20 kilometers leads from the town center to the Laguna de Salicor. It follows well-maintained secondary roads, avoiding the main road, and is described as not very difficult. A walking route is listed as 4.2 kilometers and about an hour on foot. The different distance figures can help you decide how far to go, without confusing the shorter walking route with the journey to the lagoon.

The region’s food culture has its own specialties: Campo De Criptana’s traditional dishes include the sweet Cordiales and Titos, toasted almortas served with salt and paprika. Together with the wine museum, they offer a broader view of local traditions alongside the windmills, museums, and landscape.
