Cultural and historical sites and a volcanic landscape define La Calzada de Calatrava. Church art, film themes and fortress remains meet protected nature, where hibernating bats play a special role. When planning your trip, it is worth keeping the different visiting conditions in mind.

Churches, Fortresses and Film Culture

The Iglesia Parroquial Nuestra Señora de la Asunción brings together several architectural and artistic periods. It dates from the early 17th century and was extended in 1926. Its presbytery contains seven paintings from an altarpiece dating to the second half of the 16th century; they were created by Juan Correa de Vivar. The church’s architectural history and the older altarpiece paintings thus stand side by side as distinct historical layers. The Ermita del Salvador del Mundo also has a clearly dated building history: the structure dates back to the 16th century and was rebuilt from 1760 onward, with the same Latin-cross ground plan.

Two fortress sites offer different points of interest. Castillo de Salvatierra is a fortress of Islamic origin in the municipality of La Calzada de Calatrava, in the south of Ciudad Real province. Its archaeological remains can be visited outdoors. Access is via the CR-504 and the Camino de la Bodega or Camino del Castillo; the site is about seven kilometres from La Calzada de Calatrava. Check the condition of the roads and tracks before setting out, as access by road and country tracks may change. Castillo de los Cristianos, by contrast, is a small fortification in the Sierra de la Atalaya, probably built at the beginning of the 13th century. It can only be viewed from the outside.

Film-related discoveries lead to the Espacio Almodóvar at the Centro Cultural Rafael Serrano. Set up as a film museum, it displays material about Pedro Almodóvar, his artistic world and his films. La Calzada de Calatrava is also part of the Ruta Cinematográfica de Pedro Almodóvar. Another connection between art and place is the geometric-surrealist mural “Legends from La Mancha” on the silo in Calzada de Calatrava; it was created by artist Okuda San Miguel.

A seasonal tradition is the Juego de las Caras, played during Semana Santa. It is a game of chance that the public can take part in and watch. Participation is subject to the applicable rules. If your trip falls during this period, it offers a distinct cultural highlight alongside the architectural and artistic works available year-round.

Volcanic Landscapes and Protected Nature

La Calzada de Calatrava lies in a volcanic landscape between Campo de Calatrava and the first foothills of the Sierra Morena. La Atalaya is a volcano with a basalt cap and an elevation of 1,118 metres. Its inclusion in the UNESCO-recognised Volcanes de Calatrava Geopark also places the town in a geological context. Volcanism and landscape take centre stage here, while the historic buildings offer a different thematic focus.

The Túneles del Ojailén are in the municipality and form part of a nature reserve. The five disused railway tunnels run parallel to the River Ojailén. They are part of the Natura 2000 network because they provide shelter to several endangered bat species during hibernation. Daylight is recommended for visits. However, the tunnels must not be entered, especially during the winter hibernation period. Check the latest guidance from the nature conservation authorities before visiting.

Which interests suit your stay?

When searching for hotels in Calzada De Calatrava, you can base your choice on your preferred focus: churches, fortresses and film themes are set against volcanic landscapes and the nature reserve. Visiting conditions also vary: the archaeological remains of Castillo de Salvatierra can be visited outdoors, Castillo de los Cristianos can only be viewed from the outside, and the interior of the Túneles del Ojailén is not accessible. So do not plan these places as if they offered the same kind of visit, and take the conservation requirements at the Túneles and the condition of the routes to Salvatierra into account. This lets you choose a destination based on specific interests and conditions, rather than assuming that every site can be visited in the same way.
