Torre De Juan Abad brings together literary and musical heritage with trails through the countryside. The highlights of a stay are easy to distinguish: cultural sites and historic buildings tell the story of Quevedo, the organ and older architecture; alongside these are a ten-kilometer local route, river scenery and viewpoints. For festivals, check the specific dates; for trails, check the current conditions.

Culture and Architecture

The Casa-Museo de Francisco de Quevedo displays documents, books and personal belongings of the writer. The former home of Francisco de Quevedo y Villegas, dating from the 17th century, is now a cultural center in Torre de Juan Abad. The Centro Internacional de Humor Gráfico displays a collection of more than 200 humorous works in the former Casa de Don Fernando.

The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de los Olmos originated as a small rectangular chapel that was already in existence in 1243 and was founded by the Order of Santiago. The historic organ was built by Gaspar de la Redonda in 1763 and has been preserved entirely in its original condition. The International Cycle of Historic Organ Concerts at the parish church began in 2001.

The Casa de la Tercia is also part of the town’s architectural history: this distinguished historic building is made of dressed stone. Its features include a coat of arms of Charles V carved in stone and five arches resting on square pillars. If you are planning a visit, check the access arrangements beforehand. The Fábrica de Cerámica de Santa Bárbara is an industrial building from the 19th century. A central kiln and a chimney define the building, which is an example of traditional industrial architecture.

Trails and Landscape

The local Templarios y molinos de agua route is 10 km long and can be completed on foot or by bicycle. Check the surface and conditions on site before setting out. The GR 164 Cañada Real Conquense, also known as the Cañada Real de los Serranos, is a long-distance trail that passes through Torre de Juan Abad, among other places. It is 132 km long in total and divided into six sections; other places along the route include Socuéllamos, Ruidera, Lagunas de Ruidera, Argamasilla de Alba, Valdepeñas, Torrenueva and Castellar de Santiago. The 10 km local route and the 132 km GR 164 represent different scales. Check conditions on the GR 164 before setting out.

The four-arched bridge over the Jabalón River offers a setting for walks and for enjoying the quiet landscape of La Mancha. At 1,155 meters, Cabeza del Buey is the highest point in the comarca; a walk there offers views of the landscape around the municipality of Torre de Juan Abad.

Part of the Embalse de La Cabezuela lies within the municipality. The reservoir offers opportunities for fishing and day trips into the surrounding area. Check the applicable regulations before fishing. In the wider area around Torre de Juan Abad, Sierra Morena and the steppe areas of Campo de Montiel are associated with the LIC and ZEPA protection designations. If you are planning activities there, check the boundaries and rules of the protected areas beforehand.

Festivals and Cuisine

The tradition honoring San Antón includes a Luminaria on January 17: residents gather for a meal cooked together over the fire. Check the dates and specific program for the year you plan to visit.

The pilgrimage to San Isidro takes place on May 15 at the Ermita de Nuestra Señora de la Vega; games and competitions are part of the celebrations. Local cooks prepare Mostillo, quince paste and Rosquillos de sartén for San Isidro and other festivals. Traditional cuisine in Torre de Juan Abad also includes Caldereta, lamb chops, goat meat and game dishes. Hare and rabbit are used to prepare Galianos.
