Manzanares combines the history of castles and churches with museums in historic manor houses, traditional milling and a walking route about the solar system. When choosing your accommodation, it is helpful to decide what you want to focus on during your stay: would you like to explore architecture and history, learn about Manchego cheese, or combine different themes?

Historic Buildings and Local History

Castillo de Pilas Bonas was built by the Order of Calatrava in the first half of the 13th century and designated a Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC) in 1979. It is designated as a building used for tourism and open to visitors. Check the visiting arrangements in advance before planning your visit.

Iglesia Ntra. Sra. de la Asunción has a Latin-cross floor plan, an area of 1,200 m² and five side chapels. Its south portal on the southern façade dates from the 16th century and is considered one of the finest sculptural ensembles in the province of Ciudad Real. The church is designated as open to visitors; check access during religious services before you arrive.

The town’s manor houses and noble residences also offer insight into its history: they reflect the economic, social and artistic power of local Hidalgo families between the 16th and 18th centuries. If you are interested in architectural styles, you can view these houses alongside the castle and church as different chapters in the history of Manzanares.

Museums in Historic Houses

Museo Manuel Piña preserves and shares the legacy of designer Manuel Piña (1944–1994), who was born in Manzanares. It is housed in a 16th-century manor house. In addition to its permanent exhibition, the museum offers workshops and guided tours; programme details may change. Check them if you are planning to take part in one of these activities.

Museo del Queso Manchego is located in the historic centre of Manzanares, in a manor house dating from the late 17th century. It presents the pastoral background of Manchego cheese and explains how it is made, including how the raw product is obtained. In the tasting room, visitors can sample the product and learn how to identify Queso Manchego correctly. Confirm the tasting arrangements before your trip.

Archivo-Museo Ignacio Sánchez Mejías explores his life through a range of materials: press articles, letters, posters, photographs, recordings, book covers, projections and personal belongings. These varied documents offer a distinct perspective alongside the exhibitions on design and cheese.

Milling and a Walking Route about the Solar System

Molino Grande is a 16th-century grain mill on the right bank of the mill channel of the Río Azuer, a tributary of the Guadiana. In 2018, the site opened to the public as an interpretation centre for traditional milling. Visitors can see the living quarters used by former millers and follow the grain’s journey from harvest to mill. Check the current visiting arrangements before your visit.

Paseo del Sistema Solar explores a very different subject: the walking route is just over one kilometre long, divided into two sections, and features scale models of the planets and explanatory panels with scientific information. This makes it possible to choose a visit based on your interests: Molino Grande presents a traditional way of working, while Paseo del Sistema Solar incorporates scientific information into a walking route.

Getting Around and Nature

Manzanares Tourist Office is located at the corner of C/ Empedrada and Plaza de la Constitución. Confirm the location before you arrive. The town council offers guided tours of the town’s historic sights. Schedules and booking requirements may change; check them if you are planning a guided tour.

The RĂo Azuer is recommended as a natural attraction in Manzanares. In addition, part of the municipal area is designated as an area of importance for the Spanish imperial eagle, griffon vulture and lynx. The precise boundaries of this area are a separate aspect of the surrounding area; follow the latest local signage for guidance. Alongside architectural history and museums, the river and the designated importance of the municipal area for these species offer different themes to explore during your stay.
