Solana del Pino can be explored along a range of very different trails and through its distinctive rock art tradition. The Camino de la Ermita de la Antigua starts in the town and ends at the hermitage. At Puerto de la Antigua, at an altitude of 968 metres, the trail offers panoramic views of the Sierra Madrona. If you are looking for a short route linked to prehistoric art, Route 17 Peñón Amarillo is a good option: this easy, semi-urban trail leads from the centre to the Peñón Amarillo rock art shelter and is listed as 0.60 kilometres long, taking 40 minutes.
Trails with Different Profiles
The other routes also vary in length and character. Route 18 Collado del Águila starts at Puerto de Los Rehoyos, where there is a car park and an information sign about the rock paintings of Collado del Águila. The moderately difficult Route 21 Del Cerro Membrillejo is approximately 5 kilometres long and follows rural tracks and passes through holm oak and Portuguese oak forests. Along the way, there are panoramic views of the landscape and the surrounding mountains.
Route 22 Del arroyo del Corchuelo is an 8.80-kilometre circular trail of moderate difficulty. Much of the route has little shade. The trails therefore have different profiles: Route 17 is listed as taking 40 minutes and covering 0.60 kilometres, while the terrain, distance and shade conditions on the longer routes suggest different planning. Check local conditions before setting out.
Landscape and Geological Features
Panoramic views of the Sierra Madrona and Valle de Alcudia can be enjoyed from every part of the town. The landscape includes mountains and ravines, as well as valleys covered with holm and cork oaks. A striking ravine in the surrounding area is the Hoz de Valdoro: it cuts through the quartzite ridge of the Sierra de la Umbría de Alcudia and was formed by intense headward erosion by the Río Montoro.
The Route of the Three Caves in the Hoz de Valdoro is also located in the wider area. It is listed as taking approximately 5 hours and 35 minutes; after travelling there by vehicle, the route continues on foot. Compared with the 40-minute Route 17, this is a considerably longer time commitment. These timings help distinguish short local trails from a longer excursion in the surrounding area, without treating the drive and the subsequent walk as the same thing.
Rock Art and Local History
The prehistoric rock art of Solana del Pino includes numerous schematic rock shelters scattered across the steep slopes of the municipality’s mountains. Peñón Amarillo directly connects this theme with a route: the rock art panel there comprises around 16 figures spread across the entire rock face. Some quartzite rock art panels have helped the rock shelters of Solana del Pino and nearby towns remain relatively well preserved.
Devotion to the Virgen de la Antigua also has a long history, with its cult dating back to the 16th century. The Romería de la Virgen de la Antigua is associated with the second weekend in May. Check the specific programme for your travel year before planning. The traditions of bobbin lace and crochet are also still practised in Solana del Pino. Archaeological traces, religious customs and living crafts thus sit side by side, though they are not necessarily experienced in the same way.
Local Cuisine
Typical dishes and sweets from Solana del Pino include goat stew, gachas de pito, migas de pastor, and sausages made with game and wild boar. The sweet selection includes rosetas, flores, rosquillos, rebanás and hornazos made with honey. These specialities describe the town’s culinary tradition; they do not indicate a particular restaurant or a meal available to book.
Solana del Pino is also home to a visitor reception centre for the natural park. Together with the routes, panoramas and rock art, this offers a varied impression of the town: from a short trail to a rock art shelter to longer routes and insights into its history, crafts and cuisine.
