When choosing the focus of your stay, two different scales can help: Route 16 covers 14.34 kilometres and is rated as moderately difficult; the townscape of Hinojosas de Calatrava can be explored on foot and is steep, irregular and adapted to the terrain. The nature park landscape, local history and regional cuisine complement these two perspectives.
Route 16 and its sections
The 2024 visitor guide describes Route 16 as a 14.34-kilometre trail of moderate difficulty. It passes the Presa del Tablillas, the Molino Flor de Ribera and the path to the Cueva Hoz de Valdoro. The distance to the mill is 10.5 kilometres; the section from the mill to the Hoz de Valdoro is a further 3.84 kilometres. The section to the mill is therefore longer than the one that follows. Take this uneven distribution of the route into account when planning. Check the condition of the trails before setting out.
Nature park and views
The municipality of Hinojosas de Calatrava is surrounded by the protected Valle de Alcudia y Sierra Madrona Nature Park, an area with high biodiversity. The nature park around Hinojosas de Calatrava offers suitable hiking routes. From viewpoints around the town, panoramic views stretch across holm oak groves, dehesas and hills covered in fennel. Visibility across these landscapes depends on the weather.
Townscape and church
The irregular, steep townscape invites you to explore Hinojosas de Calatrava on foot. Narrow, steep streets adapted to the terrain define the town’s medieval character. The church of San Bernardo de Claraval dominates the main square and is also part of the historic town centre. The parish church dates from the 19th century. This makes it possible to distinguish the townscape’s medieval character from the construction date of this particular building.
Mill, crafts and sights in the surrounding area
The Molino Flor de Ribera, an 18th-century mill, lies on the Montoro River. It is a starting point for hikes, and Route 16 passes by it. Bobbin lace is also one of Hinojosas de Calatrava’s craft traditions. It is a cultural aspect of the town, alongside its architectural heritage and hiking trails.
Nearby, outside the town centre, the Castillete de la Mina de la Simona is a reminder of an abandoned pyrite mine. The nearby Cueva del Castellar, also outside the town centre, preserves cave paintings. Both sites offer a perspective beyond the historic town centre, but are not part of it.
Regional cuisine
If you would also like to shape your stay around food, regional dishes include Migas, Pisto and Caldereta de Cordero. They are seasoned with olive oil from the Valle de Alcudia. This offers a distinct focus alongside hiking and local history: regional dishes.
