Herencia’s seven windmills define the plain of La Mancha and offer panoramic views. They are joined by the traditions of Carnaval de Herencia, historic cultural heritage and activities related to cheese-making. To plan your visit, you can group these themes by interest: landscape and routes, cultural history, Carnival or cheese-making traditions each offer a distinct focus.
Landscape and routes
The 19 km PR-CR5 “Llanura Manchega Villarta de San Juan–Herencia” route passes through the Sierra de Herencia and the plain of La Mancha. Along the way, you can discover, among other things, schematic rock art and Roman remains. If you want to experience both the landscape and historic traces, you can find them together along this route.
Mediterranean woodland vegetation dominates in La Pedriza, with broom, kermes oaks and holm oaks. Rosemary, rockroses, junipers, turpentine trees and thyme are also found there. The windmills represent sweeping views across the plain, while La Pedriza is known for its Mediterranean woodland vegetation. Part of the municipality of Herencia lies within the Montes de Toledo Site of Community Importance and Special Protection Area for Birds. If you want to take the exact boundaries of the protected area into account when planning, consult current official maps.
Carnival and cultural history
Carnaval de Herencia was recognised as a Festival of National Tourist Interest in June 2017. Its main traditional figures include the Perlé, the Jinetas, and the Gigantes and Cabezudos.
Alongside the festival traditions, a historic instrument and the founding of a convent provide further cultural connections. The Iglesia Parroquial Inmaculada Concepción houses a restored Baroque organ dating from 1783. It was included in the Route of Historic Organs of Castilla-La Mancha. The Convento de la Merced was founded in 1656 by Don Juan de Austria, the son of King Philip IV. It is open to visitors; check local access information before your visit.
Cheese-making traditions and local cuisine
Quhesalia is a cheese museum and interpretation centre that presents Herencia’s cheese-making traditions through interactive exhibitions and tasting areas. It offers cheese-making workshops, guided tastings and live demonstrations of the traditional production process. The exhibitions provide background information; the workshops and live demonstrations focus more on production, while the tastings are about sampling the cheese.
At festival competitions in Herencia, a thick, hot cream is served straight from the pan and eaten by dipping bread into it. A handmade fried pastry coated with honey or sugar is also considered a symbol of Carnival.
