Meadows, floodplain forest, ponds, pools, streams and the Oder River shape the Kotvice Trail in Studénka. This water-rich side of Nový Jičín District sits alongside technical collections, a hat exhibition and the Baroque Kunín Chateau. Here, you can encounter the area’s different facets: landscape and nature, the history of technology, crafts and architecture.
Floodplain landscape and trails
The Kotvice Trail runs alongside meadows, floodplain forest, ponds, pools and streams, and also passes the Oder River. Part of the route goes through the Kotvice Nature Reserve, an important nesting site for waterbirds. The trail is considered easy and suitable for children; conditions along the route may vary. Regulations for the protected area and seasonal restrictions may also change. Before your visit, check the current requirements.
The Krajinou povodní trail between Jeseník nad Odrou and Suchdol nad Odrou offers further views of nature. The Okolo Poodří cycling route focuses on the landscape of the protected area: it follows its eastern edge from Ostrava to Jeseník nad Odrou and also runs mostly along the Krakow–Vienna Greenways route.
One cycling route leads to a viewpoint overlooking the surrounding forests and Štramberk. Another route also passes the Kamenárka Natural Monument. Poodří provides a broader landscape context: it follows the Odra corridor between Fulnek and Nový Jičín and is connected with the Poodří Protected Landscape Area. While the Kotvice Trail lets you experience floodplain forest and waterways right alongside the path, Poodří refers to a larger landscape area along the river.
Chateau, collections and technology
Kunín Chateau is one of the most important Baroque chateaux in northern Moravia and Silesia. Architect Jan Lukáš Hildebrandt built it between 1725 and 1734. Both floors are accessible to wheelchair users with assistance. Please reconfirm the access arrangements before your visit.
The Novojičínsko Museum documents the region’s nature and society through collections on geology, archaeology, history, ethnography, art, textiles and fashion. It has nine branches open to the public. As its institutional structure may change, check the current information about the branches in advance.
In Kopřivnice, Muzeum Tatra Kopřivnice operates the Tatra Truck Museum, the Tatra Passenger Car Museum and the Slovenská Strela Repository. The Tatra Truck Museum displays 81 Tatra trucks and chassis across an exhibition area of more than 5,000 square metres. Interactive technical features are designed for children and accompanying adults. Alongside vehicles and chassis, the collection also offers a hands-on way to explore technology.
Hatmaking, a mine and local tradition
In Nový Jičín, at Město klobouků, you can try on more than 400 real hats and 40 virtual models. The exhibition also shows various stages of hat production. With VR headsets, visitors can see parts of the TONAK factory that are normally inaccessible. A creative workshop invites you to try your hand at being a fashion designer. Here, exhibits, insights into production and hands-on creativity come together.
The tour of the Flaschar Mine is described as a 300-metre circuit lasting 90 minutes; the length and duration may be adjusted for operational reasons. As a culinary point of reference, Štramberk is associated with the traditional pastry Štramberské uši. Together with the trails, collections and historic buildings, this speciality shows how varied the discoveries in Nový Jičín District can be.
