Suchdol nad Odrou offers two distinct ways to experience the area during a stay: the museum and historic buildings tell the story of the town and the Kravařsko region, while outside the exhibitions, visitors can explore protected nature, take walks near Kletné and enjoy the Oder River.
Museums Between Everyday Life and World History
The Museum of the Moravian Brethren is housed in a preserved small farmhouse in the Kravařsko region. Its enclosed courtyard is framed by a residential building on the right and farm buildings on the left. There, visitors can see how people lived and worked in the Kravařsko region a hundred years ago.
The museum also covers the 18th-century exile of 280 residents from Suchdol nad Odrou to Herrnhut in Saxony. There, they renewed the Unity of the Brethren and founded mission settlements in all parts of the world. The Western exhibition is dedicated to Bohumil Kašpárek, known as “Hospodář,” and the history of the Czechoslovak Pony Express. Its annual ride is part of the local tradition of Suchdol nad Odrou. A military history exhibition covers the investigation of plane crashes in North Moravia and Silesia, particularly those from the aerial battle of 17 December 1944.
The exhibition on the history of the market town at the town museum traces the region’s prehistory and first settlements through the Middle Ages to the founding of Suchdol nad Odrou and the district of Kletné. It also covers galena mining, the Teltschik family of judges, and the economic development of the originally agricultural community. Railway construction and industrial development are included, as are the history of the market town up to 1945 and notable local figures. Visits to the town museum must be arranged in advance and last about 60 minutes. Please confirm the appointment again before your visit.
Churches and Architectural History
The Church of the Holy Trinity is a single-nave Late Renaissance building dating from 1605 to 1614. Its ornate-looking tower spire is Baroque in form and topped with a double finial. The building thus brings together different architectural features.
The Evangelical Church was built from 1852 to 1858 under Senior Szepessy in the arcade style, based on a design by the Viennese architect Förster. Its interior has been preserved in its original style and includes an altar, pulpit, organ and baptismal font. The Baroque Catholic rectory was built in 1730, based on a design by the Viennese architect J. L. Hildebrandt from the same year.
Landscape, Walks and Water
The Poodřà Protected Landscape Area includes part of Suchdol nad Odrou’s cadastral area. With a little care and attentiveness, visitors can observe unique plant communities and rare animal species there. The area around Kletné offers opportunities for relaxation and pleasant walks. Along the way, visitors can see remains of former ore mining and enjoy views across the Moravian Gate valley.
The Oder River is navigable year-round from Suchdol nad Odrou. If you are planning a trip on the river, check the navigation conditions and regulations in advance.
