Vražné connects Mendel’s life story with historic buildings, a museum, an outdoor game and landscapes that extend into different parts of the municipality. When planning your visit, it helps to distinguish between the attractions by their character: some tell the story of Mendel’s life, while others offer opportunities for activity or insight into the landscape around the town.

Mendel’s footsteps in Vražné

Johann Gregor Mendel’s birthplace is a registered cultural monument of the Czech Republic (Register No. 41981/8-1698). Another place connected with his life is the Roman Catholic Church of St. Peter and Paul. It was built in 1798–1799; Mendel was baptized there on 22 July 1822, receiving the name Johann. The birthplace and the church thus represent different connections to his life story.

The Mendel Museum presents an exhibition about Mendel’s life and the rural region of Moravian Kravařsko, where he grew up. Several rooms are also devoted to genetics and breeding. The exhibition also includes a gallery with a painted biographical comic and a statue of Mendel on the ground floor. The museum therefore offers insights into both biographical themes and the science associated with Mendel. Guided visits are available by prior telephone arrangement.

Other historical sites shed light on different stages of life and local history. The original village school was in use from 1795; Mendel attended it as a child from 1831 to 1833. The Chapel of St. Florian has a small bell tower dating from 1805 and a sandstone cross. It was restored and consecrated in 1998. Mendel’s horse chestnut tree also connects local history with a specific point in the landscape: J. G. Mendel planted it together with his sister Therese, and a seating area has been set up by the tree.

Landscape and activities

Vražné is connected with two distinct landscapes: the Poodří Protected Landscape Area extends into the southeastern part of the municipality, while the Odersko Nature Park extends into the north. The location of these two areas gives the municipality a geographical structure that, alongside the historic Mendel sites, offers a separate focus for planning your trip.

For walks, there is the “Vycházková trasa obcí Vražné” route. The recreation area by the Pod Emauzy pond has facilities for small-sided football and volleyball. Another option is the coded outdoor game “Johann,” aimed at visitors to G. J. Mendel’s birthplace and tourists in Vražné. It combines a walk with solving coded puzzles and introduces Mendel and the places he returned to. The game can be played at any time of year; its route is accessible to cyclists and parents with pushchairs.

If you are choosing between a museum visit and the outdoor game, the main differences are the format and the planning involved: a guided museum visit requires prior telephone arrangement, while the game is available at any time of year. This lets you tailor your stay to your preferred focus while keeping the different visiting arrangements in mind.
