Nearly 70 ponds, meadows and the Odra River, which winds through the landscape in natural curves, define Poodří. This protected landscape area is in the Moravian-Silesian Region and encompasses the river’s flat floodplain. Here, the region reveals a different side from the ridge trails of the Beskydy Mountains or the industrial monuments around Ostrava: water, open spaces and scattered groves shape the landscape.

The views also vary in character. From the Velký Roudný lookout, you can see the Hrubý Jeseník and Nízký Jeseník ranges, Krnovsko and Opavsko, as well as the Beskydy and Oderské vrchy hills. The Rešov Waterfalls, meanwhile, lie in a canyon carved by the Huntava stream; as a national natural monument, they are an example of a very different, more enclosed landscape.

Trails with different highlights

In the Beskydy Mountains, two described routes starting from Pustevny head in different directions. The 4-kilometre Radhošťská ovčí dálnice runs via the Cyrilka lookout and the Radegast statue to Radhošť. The Beskydská horská stezka covers 8.2 kilometres and nine stops between Pustevny and Martiňák. Their distance, destination and layout give you specific points of comparison when choosing between the two trails.

In the Jeseníky Mountains, the options include mountain trails for hiking, cycling and cross-country skiing, as well as downhill ski runs. Karlova Studánka combines a distinctive village setting with opportunities to get active: the village is a conservation area with wooden and timber-clad buildings. From here, you can take trips around the Bílá Opava waterfalls and follow easy walking trails in the immediate vicinity. Trail conditions may change seasonally.

Water, technology and history

Several water-based activities are available at the Slezská Harta reservoir: in addition to swimming, you can go boating, fishing, sailing and windsurfing. The Po vulkanitech educational trail runs along both sides of the reservoir. If you prefer to travel by river, the Odra offers different conditions: it is seasonally navigable for paddlers from the confluence with the Budišovka and year-round from Suchdol nad Odrou. Water levels and navigability depend on conditions; check before setting out.

The region’s industrial history can be experienced in a variety of ways. Tours at Dolní Vítkovice cover the blast-furnace complex and the history of iron production, and include a climb up the Bolt Tower. Tour formats and availability may change, so it is worth checking before your visit. The Moravian-Silesian Technical Trail comprises 30 stops and can be explored by bicycle, as cycle paths run close to each site. At Důl Michal in Ostrava, you can see the mine’s actual rooms, including the chain changing room, dining room and lamp room.

Even smaller architectural details tell stories of technology and craftsmanship. The Wesselsky water mill in Loučky has a working millrace and a wheel nearly five metres in diameter. The Darkovičky fortification complex is a military and technical monument representing the Czechoslovak fortification system before the Second World War. If you would rather explore a castle, Hukvaldy is one of the largest castles in Moravia; from its tower, you can see the Beskydy ridges, Kopřivnice, Příbor and Ostrava.

For trips focused on relaxation, Karviná-Darkov and Klimkovice are associated with iodine-bromine baths. Komorní Lhotka is known for herbal baths and a wellness centre. Facilities and treatments may change; check the specific offerings before making plans.

Getting around and choosing a base

The region’s public transport network includes trains, regional buses and urban public transport, organised by the region and municipalities. On participating trains, the integrated ODIS transport system accepts regional, short-term and long-term tickets; the system also includes regional buses and urban public transport. ODIS-integrated ČD services run, among other places, to Budišov nad Budišovkou, Hradec nad Moravicí and Ostravice. Check routes and ticket rules before travelling.

The experiences mentioned range from floodplain landscapes and mountain trails to water activities, spa towns and industrial monuments. When choosing your accommodation, consider which of these highlights matter most for your trip, and plan specific destinations based on current connections and visitor information.
